NordVPN is bringing its VPN and antivirus protections together in one app. The best VPN for most people is now positioning itself as an "all-in-one digital security app" with privacy at its core.

Threat Protection Pro is being re-named, and stylized as "next-generation antivirus." The app is built around three core pillars – VPN, antivirus, and other features such as Dark Web Monitoring.

It aims to stop threats before they reach your device, rather than focusing on reactive virus detection. NordVPN says it's time to redefine the "outdated" antivirus concept, and believes that "the threat landscape has outgrown the file."

All-in-one protections

Traditional antivirus works by detecting malicious files, but threats are evolving. Phishing, fake online stores, scam messages, and identity theft often rely on compromised credentials and social engineering rather than downloadable malware.

NordVPN wants to stop these threats – in real time – before they reach your device. Three pillars are guiding its actions:

  • Connect (VPN)
  • Protect (Antivirus)
  • Monitor (Other features including Dark Web Monitor)

Marijus Briedis, CTO of NordVPN, said "protection needs to evolve" and "should address the real risks people face online today." Briedis said NordVPN's new approach "reflects what users increasingly want from digital protection – stronger security, less complexity, and fewer separate tools to install and manage."

NordVPN isn't creating a brand new product, it's rebranding Threat Protection Pro. The tool, under its new antivirus name, will offer:

  • Scam and phishing protection
  • Malware protection
  • Ad and tracker blocking
  • Identity and account takeover protection
  • File and device protection

Threat Protection Pro is currently included in NordVPN Plus plans and above, along with the NordPass password manager. Threat Protection Lite and basic Dark Web Monitoring is included with all plans.

NordVPN Complete gets you Dark Web Monitor Pro, Scam Call protection, and encrypted cloud storage.

NordVPN Prime is NordVPN's most premium plan. It includes everything the VPN has top offer and sees the addition of identity theft protection, Coveron (previously known as NordProtect).

Privacy remains a priority

NordVPN has said its security approach is designed to collect the "minimum signal required to make a threat decision," avoiding its app becoming a "surveillance product."

This principle is guiding NordVPN's approach to threat detection technologies. It highlighted how it is using machine learning models for certain threat categories that improve accuracy and speed.

"Consumers should not have to choose between convenience, protection, and privacy," explained Briedis. "Our goal is to bring together advanced VPN technology and next-generation antivirus in one streamlined app experience that reduces complexity and better matches how people think about digital safety today."
