No matter whether you've got one of the best laptops with loads of storage space or even if you pay a cloud provider for online backup, everyone needs an external hard drive in their life.

Online systems go down, files get corrupted and laptops die. When any of that happens, you'll be glad to have your videos, documents and other essential files safely tucked away on an external drive. And right now, there's a heck of a deal at Amazon that drops this 20TB WD External Hard Drive to its lowest ever price — just $269.

WD Elements Desktop External Hard Drive (20TB): was $349 now $269 at Amazon

Whether you need to store high-res photos to 4K video files to massive game downloads, you'll benefit from the leg room the WD Elements drive offers. It's now on sale for an all-time low price.

Traditionally, this high capacity drive would set you back $359 so that's a wallet-friendly $80 saving for Black Friday. It's the lowest price I've ever seen for this item and although I've recently swapped to some portable Samsung SSDs for my offline storage, I've used WD external hard drives in the past (and paid more than this!) so I can vouch for their reliability.

The drive is Windows PC plug-and-play ready out of the box, but it can easily be formatted for Mac systems. It supports USB 3.0 for fast transfer speeds and is reasonably compact at 5.30 x 1.89 x 6.53 inches.

The drive also includes Western Digital's backup software to automate periodic file backups and comes with a two-year manufacturer's warranty. Just be aware that if you want to use it for a game console, you'll need to reformat it first. Once it's set up, it should give you some extra leg room for a comfortable game library.

The design isn't exactly remarkable — it's a black box. But it is durable and shock-resistant, so you shouldn't worry if it takes a bump or two.

I would always recommend you invest in cloud storage as well as an external hard drive just to make doubly sure. However, if you're looking for a reliable, easy add-on storage solution for your home, this is a good start!
