Google Maps is great for finding where you need to go, but when it comes to where you've already been the app is... inconsistent, to say the least. I can't tell you the amount of times I've gone to the navigation bar looking for something, and the "recent" options are all random places I haven't searched for in months — plus some I don't ever remember looking for.
Thankfully it sounds like Google is working on an update to solve this issue. As spotted by Android Authority, there's a new "Your recent places" section in the You tab in the latest version of the Google Maps app (version 25.34.00.796159725).
Although the change apparently hasn't rolled out to everyone yet. I don't see any sign of the change despite having updated to that same version of Google Maps on my own device.
Judging from the screenshots shared by Android Authority, this new list sits above the "Your lists" area in the tab. With it are filters that will let you sort locations by type, as well as the option to bookmark and share individual spots, or delete from your history entirely.
Nobody needs to know how often you drive to the local pizzeria, after all, especially not Google.
It's not fully clear whether this feature relies on you having the Timeline switched on. My guess would be yes, though, otherwise Google's going to struggle to remember where you've been going.
Or maybe I guessed wrong, and this count is a totally independent system that relies on tracking your trips, rather than your physical location. We'll just have to wait and see how that works once this feature is rolling out more widely.
But, hopefully, it means accessing all the places you've either been to or searched for recently stops being a complete headache.
