The most useful thing ChatGPT can do isn’t what you think — and it’s incredibly simple
ChatGPT, like the many other AI tools out there, is able to achieve a lot of incredible things. In just seconds, it can generate long reports, it can answer questions that would take you hours and it seemingly knows everything. But there is a simple feature you’re probably not using enough.
When using the chatbot, you are able to add photos and files which you can then prompt the chatbot on. I know what you’re thinking… of all the things ChatGPT can do, that’s the one that stands out?
Well, this is a feature that I use constantly on ChatGPT and it has opened up so many extra opportunities.
There is the obvious use cases, like giving it text to read through or documents to analyze, but there is lots of other possibilities here if you get creative. These are some of my favorites.
Redesign a space
If you’re looking to spruce up a space, whether that be a garden, bedroom or your office, ChatGPT can be a great assistant on this. Simply attach all of the relevant images, including photos of the space and floor plans if you have them, and ChatGPT will generate a plan.
Using a photo of my garden, I asked ChatGPT to redesign the space, including a seating area and lots of greenery. ChatGPT replied with a long list of possible changes, including what to remove, which plants would suit the space the most, rough costs and more.
It then followed up by asking if I wanted a before and after photo using AI generation. The entire exchange took roughly five minutes and gave me a plan, costs, the most effective plants and even a photo of what it could look like.

Help me with my writing
Since the GPT-5.1 update, ChatGPT has become even better at understanding and editing writing. If you’ve got a long document you’re working on, you can attach it to ChatGPT and watch as the model speeds through it.
ChatGPT can return suggested edits, point you in the right direction on an ending and overall improve a document. I have found it especially useful for tidying up an angle where it gets a bit lost. It can also be great for identifying potential sources of information that can help support your work.
Sort through this file
If you’ve got a massive file of information, whether its an Excel spreadsheet or a long piece of text, it can be really challenging to sort through it yourself.
Put ChatGPT to the task and it can find the information in there for you. I gave ChatGPT a spreadsheet recently with thousands of data points and asked it to analyze the data and pick out key points.
In a couple of minutes, it returned exactly what I needed. In the past, these kind of tasks could take huge chunks of time out of my day.
Help me fix this
Whether you’ve got a broken pot, or you’re trying to work out how to fix a leaky tap, ChatGPT can help identify an issue and guide you in how to fix it.
Attach a photo of the problem and ask ChatGPT to help identify next steps. This can either help you fix it, or guide you in the right direction in how to describe the problem to an expert.
The benefit here is that you can then chat back and forth with the AI chatbot, adding extra images or additional points as you continue to troubleshoot the problem.
Sort my resume
If your resume has been left untouched for a while, it could potentially be in need of a redesign. ChatGPT can help out here, and can do the same with your LinkedIn if you give it a link.
This can be everything from spotting spelling mistakes to identifying unnecessary information and more.
Because of its huge understanding of the internet, ChatGPT is able to understand what recruiters are looking for and uses this information to its advantage here.
