I believe sharpening communication skills takes a lifetime of practice. Personalities, preferences, political views and life experiences all shape how people receive a message, so I’m constantly thinking about the best way to connect with them. Whether I’m at work, on a date or handling everyday conversations, I want to come across as informed, thoughtful and aware of the tone I’m using.

When personal or professional conversations happen over text or email, I follow a system to keep my responses clear, concise and respectful. I write the message, review it, sometimes ask someone I trust for feedback and then run it through ChatGPT to get another perspective on how it may land.

The 10 prompts ChatGPT gave me offer a quick and practical way to keep improving my communication skills. They help me refine messages, respond thoughtfully to someone’s emotions and handle difficult conversations with more confidence.

At first, I asked ChatGPT to produce a list of prompts that could be applied whenever I’m looking for ways to communicate better in the workplace, with neighbors I have issues with, with people who have differing political views, with dating partners, etc.

The chatbot went on to break out 10 prompts that stood out as reliable ways to discover the best approaches to a myriad of social interactions through in-person convos and over text:

  • The 'Say It Better' prompt: Rewrite this message to sound clear, confident, and respectful without coming across as aggressive: [paste message]. (Perfect for emails, texts, or Slack messages where tone can easily be misread)
  • The 'Difficult Conversation Prep' prompt: Help me prepare for a conversation where I need to say [topic]. Give me a calm, constructive way to express my point and avoid sounding defensive. (Great for workplace feedback, relationship talks, or neighbor disputes)
  • The 'Different Views' translator: Explain how someone with an opposing view on [topic] might see this issue. Suggest a respectful way to respond that keeps the conversation productive. (Helps de-escalate political or ideological disagreements)
  • The 'Tone Check' prompt: Does this message sound rude, passive-aggressive, or unclear? If so, rewrite it to sound friendly and direct: [paste message]. (Catches subtle tone issues before you hit send)
  • The 'Set Boundaries' prompt: Help me set a clear but polite boundary in this situation: [describe situation]. Give me 3 variations: firm, friendly, and very gentle. (Useful for coworkers, friends, dating partners—anyone)
  • The 'Active Listening' prompt: I want to respond in a way that shows I understand the other person. Here’s what they said: [paste]. Help me craft a thoughtful reply. (Builds trust and prevents miscommunication)
  • The 'De-escalation Script' prompt: Write a short response that calms tension in this situation without agreeing or backing down: [describe conflict]. (Ideal for heated arguments or emotionally charged exchanges)
  • The 'Clarity Booster' prompt: Turn this into a clear, concise message with a strong main point and no fluff: [paste message]. (Especially useful in professional settings where brevity matters)
  • The 'Empathy Builder' prompt: What might this person be feeling in this situation: [describe scenario]? How can I respond in a way that acknowledges that? (Improves emotional intelligence across all relationships)
  • The 'Post-Conversation Fix' prompt: I think I handled this conversation poorly: [describe what happened]. What could I have said differently, and how can I follow up to repair it? (Helps you recover from awkward or tense moments)

As someone who has spoken with people who oppose student loan forgiveness, I wanted to see how ChatGPT would explain the core reasons behind those views, and how I could approach the debate without letting it spiral into a full-blown argument.

ChatGPT began by noting that people who oppose student loan forgiveness are not always lacking empathy. In many cases, their views stem from a mix of priorities, values and personal experiences.

When I asked for the most common reasons behind that position, the chatbot highlighted the following:

  • fairness concerns between those who did and didn’t take out loans
  • focusing on the personal responsibility on the part of those who actually took out the loans
  • a negative economic impact if student loan forgiveness passes through
  • a moral hazard that could arise as future loan borrowers may take on debt, expecting it to be cancelled in the future
  • a feeling of targeting the wrong solution, since they feel the better fixes would be reducing college costs, reforming the education system, or improving loan structures as a whole

ChatGPT then gave me a template response that I could shape into my own voice while adding my counterpoints:

I understand why the fairness argument resonates, especially for people who already paid off their loans or avoided debt altogether. From my perspective, student loan forgiveness is more of a response to how expensive college has become and how that burden affects people’s ability to build stable lives. I don’t see it as a perfect solution, but I do think it could provide meaningful short-term relief while lawmakers work toward longer-term fixes, such as lowering tuition costs and making future borrowing less necessary.

This was just one of the approaches ChatGPT offered to help me engage in difficult conversations in a respectful, thoughtful way that could lead to more productive interactions.

Final thoughts

As a journalist, I’m always on the lookout for the best avenues I should take when trying to communicate better in person, over text and through my articles.

The prompts ChatGPT supplied me with stand out as a great way to examine all sorts of social interactions, find out the proper solutions that’ll (hopefully) prevent a jumbled discourse and polish my communication skills over time.
