HP's Printer, Android Tablet Combo Ships

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

HP's Android-powered 7-inch tablet has arrived as part of an AIO printer bundle.

Although reports have surfaced indicating that HP's Android-powered "Zeen" tablet has been spotted in the wild, the device is actually part of HP's Photosmart eStation C510 AIO printer which was officially launched on Tuesday.

Sporting Android 2.1 and HP's TouchSmart interface, the detachable, 7-inch tablet docks on the front of the printer and can be used as a "wireless digital companion and control panel for remote printing." Users can take the tablet anywhere in the house and check email, surf the Internet, check the weather, update Facebook and more using an available Wi-Fi connection.

The drawback is that the tablet is reportedly Yahoo oriented, offering Yahoo Search, Yahoo Instant Messenger, Yahoo Mail and other services. The tablet also doesn't offer multimedia playback nor does it offer the Android Market. Instead, users are directed to HP's app store or use Yahoo's included suite of widgets and apps.

On a positive note, Barnes & Noble's Nook store and e-book reading were said to perform well, and the tablet is slated to receive Android 2.2 (aka Froyo) by the end of the year--but without the Android Market. Thanks to HP ePrint and the printer's Wi-Fi connection, users can also print from anywhere, whether it's from the other side of the house or from the other side of town.

HP's Photosmart eStation C510 AIO printer with included tablet is now available for $399.99 and can be purchased online here or from participating retailers.

I stopped asking "Why?" along time ago. And I am not about to start doing so again.

No reason to degrade the thing with less features...

Then again... how many people REALLY need a printer for a tablet device? Any modern tablet should work with most wireless printers. With my desktop - I use the scanner 10x more than I print, which is about 3-5 sheets per month.

the point would rather be: I can see this ROM cracked within a couple months and the printer's driver extracted; then it is only a matter of releasing it in an app to allow other Android devices to use a printer wirelessly.

Now if they can make one of these for businesses, it'd be great. Public/County libraries and higher education would benefit, particularly if it had a built-in card reader.

I'm wondering why we need an Android tablet for a printer.

so the tablet will cost $389.99, the printer $10, while the inks (sold separately) will choke you for $99.99?
Yeah..thanks for the offer, but i'll pass....

While I think the concept has merit, considering the quality of HP has plummeted into an abyss, and their notorious reputation for bundling a bunch of crapware with every product, I will avoid this product of syphilitic snake-oil salesmen, and wait to see offerings from other vendors who are a whole lot less sadistic toward their customers
