US-based Hyperkin is currently working on a handheld SNES console.
US-based gaming accessories manufacturer Hyperkin is currently working on a handheld version of Nintendo's Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Called the "Supaboy," it will be fully functional, feature a built-in 3.5-inch LCD screen, and support the original SNES cartridges when it supposedly launches here in the States sometime this summer.
While the company hasn't released anything official, CVG reports that the device will weigh around 11.2-ounces and feature a rechargeable battery offering just over five hours off a single charge. There's also an A/V jack for connecting the handheld to any TV with RCA jacks, and even two ports mounted on the front for connecting classic SNES controllers.
As expected, Supaboy sports an SNES controller form factor-- even the D-Pad, action buttons and shoulder buttons mirror their classic counterpart locations. The backside plays host to the battery compartment and also what looks to be a switch for locking the SNES cartridge into place. Still, given that the device is only in the prototype stage at this point, features can be added, removed, and rearranged by the time the final product ships.
At the time of this writing, pricing and actual availability is unknown. There's also no indication if Supaboy will be a US-only product, or if Hyperkin plans to release a PAL version.

If this were 1993 I would have just pissed myself with excitement. But since it isn't, this is only interesting as a curiosity.
Awesome, time to open up some dusty old boxes!
meh, Id rather wait for xperia and find a snes emulator. No way in hell Im gonna walk around carrying that thing. And my laptop is pretty convenient too.
I have a handheld snes allready. Its called an android based cell phone lol
+1 cburke.
^
Definitely agree (with cburke82 and bsbsbsbs)
Hm.... out of all the Game consoles that Nintendo has made, i would have to say a handheld GameCube system would of been a little more practical. Mainly due to the fact that there a lot of people with GC games compared to SNES games and in theory could be a little more compact than that would.
But thats just my option (now dont get me wrong there a lot of good games with the SNES like Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (great story line) it's just my thinking when looking at an overall market).
since I am currently beating Megaman X for the billionth time right now for free with zsnes, I don't see how this is going to sell 1 system, when many others can do the same. Especially since its running on Amd single core processors on my schools computer.
Yes, adding to others here. I'd prefer to just have the original SNES carts and then use an android phone.
That said, if it's region free and has a few other tweaks than it might be alright plugged into a TV. However, I still think I'd prefer the original SNES.

You sir, are a champion. Lufia 2 was (and still is) a brilliant game.
Sega made a hand-held version of the Genesis in 1995 called the Sega Nomad. Why would someone think it's a good idea to sell a hand-held version of the SNES in 2011? Especially considering that many phones and other hand-held devices can emulate the SNES?

I should imagine it's the same reason Obama got elected..people will buy any old thing as long as there's enough glitter. In the case of Obama, it's any old 'crap'.

Ty. Yeah my dad still has an SNES with a hole bunch of games and one of them is Lufia 2. Definitely a well executed game between game play and story line. Although I wished i could save at that very last part were you have the powerful sword (forgetting the name atm) and use it on anything you disire. Instead of your "hich hikers" saying something along the nature of "hey! head to the boss to defeat him! Not running of as you please!"
FF3 on the road sounds good to me
-1 to the spammer. It would of been better if it came out when N64 was still new.
Blaze handheld Megadrive (Genesis): £20

8GB SDHC card: £6
1000+ games: £0
About a billion times more fun than my mates £200 3DS: Priceless
I liked the idea when I read the title, then I clicked it and saw it was still going to use the massive cartridges and looked horrible. They shouldve made it all digital.
Fake.

When you're in a tech forum and you want to make a political comment, think of 2 words: Shut Up.
Laptop + Emulator = Portable SNES

As much as a I detest Obama....agreed. This is Toms Guide, not Toms Politics. Wow, could you all imagine if there were such a thing. And you all think the Apple vs MS trolls are bad. LOL

yeah... if I wanna play snes on the go i'll just install an emulator on my phone.
They'll need to license the games from Nintendo and sell cartridge game packs containing a few dozen games apiece. Most people don't still have their old games and I don't want to have to carry around a backpack for when I want to switch games.
FC-16 Go has been out a year and looks better than this thing from Stone age gamer. Plus it comes with wireless controllers.

If this thing depends on users having old SNES cartridges, it will fail period. If however, they allow consumers to easily access Nintendo's library of SNES games (perhaps digital download?), I think it's an interesting idea. But even then it will only appeal to the older generation of gamers, and we're a limited and dying breed. I've quit playing games altogether because it's been years since anything worth playing has been released.

Nintendo is currently developing its online catalog that includes SNES games you can play on the Wii and I believe going to release them for the 3DS. So I am thinking, no, Nintendo is not going to be interested in licensing their games to a third party. Needing the original cartridges, I guess, avoids the whole messy licensing issue. This is opposed to Sega who seems happy to license it's titles to anyone willing to pay.
battery life still sucks
when will the devs realize battery life is the deal breaker
