CES 2010: Sony Bloggie Lineup

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Yet another Flip Video rival has emerged, this time from Sony in the form of the Bloggie camcorder.

Sony has entered the pocket camcorder arena with its Bloggie product line. There are a few different models, but the mainstream and most popular is the MHS-PM5K. The PM5K records MP4 video at a range of resolutions and framerates, including 1080p/30p and 720p/60p.

The PM5K line shares a number of qualities with its Flip Video rivals, including the popular pop-up USB connector. While Flip devices have HDMI, the PM5K series uses a proprietary component video out. However, the Bloggies do have removable, rechargeable batteries, something the Flip products do not have. There is no internal storage, but the PM5K takes both SD and Memory Stick Pro Duo cards, up to 32 GB. Both cards utilize the same universal slot within the camera. Where the Flip cameras can shoot video straight until the storage is exausted, the Bloggies can only do 30 minute clips at a time, regardless of SD/MS card size. However, the Bloggie strikes back with its ability to take still images.

The Flip and Bloggie lineups are certainly contrasted on a variety of festures, but the Bloggies does have one very cool add-on. With a special attachment, the Bloggie can shoot 360 degree video - no that's not a typo. When the Bloggie lens is in the up position and the special lens is attached, an entire circle of footage is captured, something no Flip camera can do.

The PM5K series starts at $170, but for $190 you can get the camera with an 8 GB memory card.

That 360 view is pretty nifty, prices is alright too. Too bad you cant get that lens attachment for ordinary cameras.

Hey Sony lose the Memory Stick Pro Duo and make the unit smaller and cheaper at the same time.

Why a 30 minute time limit? That's pointless.
And why a proprietary connector? Oh wait, it's Sony.

Agreed. I passed on a few Sony products (mainly cameras) just because they had MMS Pro Duos.

The article states Flip Video Cameras don't have removable rechargable batteries.

Hmm, that must be a rock powering my Flip Utral HD 2nd Gen then. Why the proprietary cable?

I'll stick to flip. Can't go wrong with them, plus the underwater housing is amazing for spear fishing footage.

The 360 lens.... that's ought to be awesome... is the lens included or do you have to buy it separately? If so how much is it?

I don't understand why companies still insist on using proprietary components.

Has anyone EVER shot a 30 minute uninterrupted video clip. I have owned many camcorders, and if any of those had this limitation I would have never known. And Sony are not the only ones to have out a proprietery video-out. The mini-HDMI connector is quite new and before that almost every one was using a proprietery video-out.
And as wementioned this thing takes both SD and MS Duo sticks - so I have them - now you want me to throw them away?
Why all this Sony bashing ... wait because it's Sony!

I wasn't aware that Sony fans were as zealous as Apple fans.

Anything proprietary immediately loses all appeal to me (and many other people like me).

Will I shoot longer than 30minutes uninterrupted? Probably not. But at least my flip ultra can record 2 hours in the event I witness Bigfoot playing Monoply against 3 Greys.

I know this 30 minutes limit comes as a disappointment, as it is not mentioned anywhere on the Sony site and after buying few of them, i am stuck with this :-/
