Nintendo: There is No Wii HD

Sorry HD fans, Nintendo isn't feeling it.

Love your HDTV and how it's able to display such crisp images when paired with a high-definition source? Of course you do. But things seem a little off when your Wii is pumped through your HDTV even with its 480p signal. We'd imagine that things could be improved vastly even with upscaling to a native HD signal, which leads many hoping for a Wii HD.

Sadly, it seems that Nintendo doesn't feel the same way. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told GameTrailers TV in certain terms that a Wii HD isn't coming.

Reggie: Michael [Pachter] continues to be the only one who believes that this is gonna happen. I don't know how forcefully we can say there is no Wii HD.

Keighley: It's not coming, period?

Reggie: No.

Why upscale on the Wii? Your TV can do that already with a 480p signal. Native HD rendering would be awesome but it is beyond the capacity of the Wii.
Upscaling on the Wii is pointless.

They won't even let you play DVDs even though it can.
Sega died so Nintendo could live, it's a sad world.

Good thing I still have my CRT

Bad thing I still have my CRT........ Nintendo is lame. LOL I have my Wii plugged into my CRT though and my xbox360 enjoys a 42" HDTV. My wii is mearely a paperweight underneath my tv set.

Oh and the guy in the pic I forgot what his name is but he is no Steve Jobs nor Steve Ballmer.

I have all three consoles. And even though I buy whatever game is multi-platform on my 360. My PS3 still gets played more..

It is quite annoying though when I do play some Super Smash Bros. and it's kind of blurry..

Only not coming until they change their minds.

The Wii would need a complete hardware upgrade. The thing can hardly play 480p games without lagging.

As mentioned above, they could put a scaling chip into the Wii to support 1080p... but its just shifting the process from the HDTV to the Wii. Honestly I trust my HDTV to do a better scaling job than a $200 console.

Nintendo is all about pushing out-of-date technology in its "new" consoles. If consumers are lucky, their "next generation" hardware might even be half as powerful as an Xbox 360!

Yeah i dont really care about seeing upscaled wii games. I very much would like a nintendo console that outputs true HD tho, but it's illogical to expected that until the next console.

I agree, I do how ever feel that Nintendo will be the first one to push out a new console. I have this feeling that with the Wii they have just about hit the cap of what they will sell and HD TV's are getting cheaper almost daily (I was just at Walmart) and I had reverse sticker shock on actual 1080P TV's you can get a nice TV for less then 800$ now.

I think next Christmas after this one will be the Wii's last holiday season on the shelf as Nintendo's only home console.

1. It has never been more clear how much Nintendo is for kids, and now casual/nongamers.

2. M. Pachter is full of himself and usually wrong.

I think it's a nice move from Nintendo to wait until the next generation. At that time DX11 will be a sure bet for the next-gen gpu choices. With cards like Juniper, I am sure the next Nintendo console will be able to launch at 220$.

You can plug your Wii into your HDTV using composite cables... DOH! Fanboy...

The 360 and the PS3 got PC games port... except a handful of exclusives titles, both console offer really few games of high quality that I can't enjoy on my PC.

RE5... no... SF4... no... Mass Effect... hmmm... Modern Warfare... The Witcher... oups, PC exclusive.

Seriouly, I can care less about Halo and Gears of War. The only game I am missing till today is Virtua Fighter 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Valkyrie Chronicle and Demon Soul.

Its isn't about being the best, its about providing good value for the shareholders and for the consumers.

The Wii isn't the best console for hardcore gamers but it provides a lot of fun for the price and appeals to a much wider audience.

Don't buy it. Consider to whom Reggie speaks - Gametrailers (i.e. the consumer). Next week he will meet with Goldman Sachs and to expect the Wii HD by Q4 2010. Of course he's going to say this - meanwhile Nintendo's president is saying HD for Nintendo is a "natural progression". Smoke and mirrors peeps.

Graphics aside, The Wii is still the best damn play experience to break the mold of d-pad controllers.
*swings the controller around, tilts it side to side, plays virtual golf

Let's keep in mind, Nintendo isn't focusing on the high end gaming crowd like Sony and Microsoft are with their consoles. That's easily proven by the difference in games, controllers, console prices, graphics quality, etc...

Nintendo has their portion of the market share for a reason.

I find it annoying that Nintendo is constantly releasing "new" stuff. Stuff that is in fact not new at all but simply adding things that we already have in our cell phones.

It's sad that the ZuneHD or ipod touch both are better gaming systems.

Does anyone even believe this? Off coarse they are going to say it will never happen even if they did plan on doing it. They would shoot themselves in the foot sales wise if they told everyone too far out. Everyone that doesn't have one would just wait. It is the same thing companies do when denying price cuts.

And 360 owners would be lucky to find something anywhere near half a gaming PC. ^_^

nintendo wil be the next duclk to die , if thier next console can't offer something more complelling than just a new ( and gimicky) control scheme. i hate how sega's hard ware dep had to die ( and no sega didn't die they just closed shop on their hardware). sega at elast did inovative things withn all thier systems . nintendo wil die saddly some of us may look back and realize while teh wii was crap ... we will miss nintendo when they go bye bye

If and when Nintendo decides to go to HD in a console, they could really bring in a whole new consumer base. But as we all know, logic plays no part in much of anything these days.

Great, thanks Nintendo for holding back console development for another 10 years...

The Wii or "GameCube rehashed" must cost perhaps $10 to make. I wonder just how much they're making on each Wii.
