Nintendo Launches Mario DS for Black Friday

Black Friday is here and with it come deals you won’t get on any other day during the run up to the holidays. One such deal is the limited edition Mario DS from Nintendo.

Nintendo this week announced that the company would be releasing two special limited edition Nintendo DS bundles to coincide with Black Friday: the Mario Red bundle and the Ice Blue bundle.
The DS included in the Mario bundle is red all over, unlike the two-tone "crimson" DS, and it does have the trademark Mario "M" logo on the front. The Ice Blue color, however, has been available for some time now in Japan. Aside from that, there’s really nothing else worth mentioning about the bundles. The Mario bundle comes with a copy of New Super Mario Brothers and the Ice Blue bundle comes with the original Brain Age. Both will set you back $150.
While there’s not all that much extra with these (we figured they might throw in a case or some headphones, something), we’re willing to bet parents and gamers will go nuts for these. More for the Mario bundle than the Ice Blue but at the end of the day, a DS is a DS right? Word on the grapevine is the handhelds from Nintendo will be thin on the ground this year so if you end up with the Ice Blue bundle, don’t be too upset.
Let us know if you get your hands on either of these bundles.

I can't help but feel that this is just some sort of cash grab since the DSi is already in production and sold in Japan.
Granted, the DSi production probably wouldn't be able to keep up with American holiday demand anyway, and Nintendo will sell a crazy amount of DS Lites this holiday.
I wonder how many would-be DS purchasers would hold off on buying one of these if Nintendo made it clear in the U.S. market that newer hardware will be out next year.
I don't understand the DSi personally. It adds a bunch of features that aren't standard, even though it isn't a new console, just a new iteration. And the lack of GBA port means it not only has no BC (downside in my mind), it makes it incompatible with some DS games and accessories.
So now we have 2 products that look the same, play some of the same games, have extremely similar names, but game for one won't work on the other?
