FujiFilm Camera Knows if Your Cat, Dog is Looking
Say cheese, Cujo!
Most point-and-shoots these days include technology that detects faces and smiles. Some of them can even be set to automatically take the photo as soon as everyone in the picture is smiling at the same time. However, as any pet owner will know, cameras don't detect pets like they do humans. Until now, that is.
PCWorld reports that FujiFilm's Finepix Z700 features a face-detection function that can recognize canine and feline faces. Similar to the way smile detection works, the Finepix Z700 can snap a picture automatically when your pooch or kitty looks towards the camera lens.
However, there is one glaring problem. Dogs and cats are notoriously squirmy and active and FujiFilm says the function doesn't work if the animal is moving. It's also more (or less) accurate depending on the breed of dog or cat you have.
The handful of cats and dogs portrayed in the pictures below are just a few of the compatible breeds. There are nearly 50 more dogs and 20 more cats listed on FujiFilm's website.
FujiFilm lists possible detection difficulties as the following:
- Black patches on the animal's face
- Large patches around the eyes or nose
- Dark colored animals in general, particularly cats or dogs without much contrast between facial features and body
- Wrinkly short muzzles
- If the distance between the eyes and tip of the nose is comparatively long.
- Cats with thin faces
- Cats or dogs with hair over their eyes or faces
- Detection of cats or dogs in backlit situations
According to PCW, the camera will hit the market this month with a pricetag of $280. If details other than "might be able to take your dog's picture" interest you, the 12-megapixel camera boasts a 3.5-inch display and measures in at just under 17mm thick.

My wrinkly, droopy-faced boxer will never show up, lol.
I think that Abyssinian is evil, I can tell...
That'd be awesome! Until it mistakens someone's human face for that of a dog or cat.
Then the lawsuit will come
All the dogs look retarded except for the Shiba...lmao..
They're all so cute! Almost makes me wanna get a dog or another cat. Damn you Jane!
I've always found it hard to get my cat to actually "look" into the camera when trying to take a pic. If he does, it's usually the "evil eye."
Idon't think it is very practical. Too many factors and variables involved in getting a good photo.
Yet the Japanese still can't get a camera that focus/meter correctly on a dark skinned person.
maine coon, ftw!

I know, I know. I couldn't resist, though. It's Monday!
auto smile detection -- pretty useless feature if you ask me. you decide when and what content you want to capture. the camera should not do that for you. it should capture the picture as realistically as possible.
what useless crap, I wish they would bring back the F31D sensor instead of developing things like this.
