More than 400,000 Blackberry users downloaded the MySpace application in the first week of its release.

In fact, both companies describe the number of downloads as "shattering records" although neither give any point of reference. Still, 400k downloads seems rather notable for a mobile platform in just one week, showing just how popular MySpace really is even for Blackberry owners. Apparently not only has the application broken records, but its users collectively sent and received more than 15 million messages and updated their mood and status over two million times in the first week of release.

"This rapid adoption is a reflection of an evolving consumer lifestyle where social connectivity and information access are more important than ever," said Jim Balsillie, Co-Chief Executive Officer at Research In Motion. "This powerful new mobile application combines social networking and mobility in a highly personalized and empowering manner and we are very excited to see such a positive response in the first week."

The application is rather simplistic but fully optimized for the mobile platform. The program features a toolbar stretched across the top, displaying icons for checking MySpace mail, managing friend requests, adding comments to the MySpace page, displaying a list of friends and managing photos. What the program will not do is allow users to manage physical aspects of the webpage, upload videos or alter music lists. Ultimately, the program "integrates MySpace’s primary social networking components with the BlackBerry platform to provide instant, push-based messaging to users."

"We established an innovative and collaborative partnership with RIM to address a key desire of consumers to have greater mobile connectivity and interaction with their friends and the global community at large," said Chris DeWolfe, co-founder and chief executive officer of MySpace. "This record shows just how much of a force in the mobile consumer space RIM and MySpace have become."

MySpace is the largest social network in North America, with more than 110 monthly active users globally and an average of 300,000 users signing up daily. An estimated 1 in 4 Americans has a MySpace page, and in the UK, it is just as common to own a MySpace page as it is to own a dog. Founded by Chris DeWolfe, CEO and Tom Anderson, President, the Los Angeles-based company launched in January 2004, and was later acquired by Fox Interactive Media in October 2005. Earlier this year MySpace featured 100 billion rows of data, 1.5 billion relationships, 10 billion friend relationships with 60,000 new videos being uploaded to MySpace TV each day.

The MySpace application for Blackberry can be downloaded here via PC or here via the Blackberry browser. MySpace for Blackberry is currently available for the Bold, Curve, Pearl 8800 series; a version for the Storm launches November 24.

400,000 people who would be wise to switch to the iPhone.

I had 4 blackberry pearls. It took lots of alcohol and a new iPhone (amongst other things) to restore the sanity that the BBs stole from me.
