Update (October 1): The original source for this article has updated its quotes, making it clear that Chung did not specify North American clients in his answer. The North American element came from the original question, not Chung's response.
The original article follows.
More proof of the iPhone Fold's impending launch has come from a senior figure working at Apple's main rival Samsung.
Samsung Display's president, Chung Yi, was quoted as saying that the company was getting ready for "mass production (of OLEDs for foldable phones to be supplied to North American customers," according to ChosunBiz. Chung added that "We are making thorough preparations," during the event in Seoul, South Korea at which he was speaking.
Chung made this statement alongside more business-related comments about government tax incentives and preparations for building its more efficient, next-gen OLED tech. But it's the talk of foldable screens that has us abuzz.
While Chung said that "I cannot disclose specifics regarding our customers," he added, it's not a stretch to interpret Apple as the mysterious client. Apple already uses Samsung Display panels for several iPhone models. And since Samsung has been in the foldable phone game longer than anyone else, it makes sense that Apple would seek them out once again to help with components.
The only other likely U.S. companies that Chung could possibly be talking about would be Google and Motorola, both of which already sell foldable phones.

Apple and Samsung, working in harmony
After years of rumors, the iPhone Fold is finally tipped to launch next year, alongside the iPhone 18 series. Sources have described the first foldable Apple phone as a doubled-up iPhone Air with a two-grand pricetag. But in spite of the pricing, Apple seems to be preparing for big sales figures.
The best foldable phones have come a long way since the first models launched almost a decade ago. But hopefully Apple's slow path to its own foldable will lead to a competitive first-gen product. The fact it's an iPhone will no doubt help convince a few upgraders who have never tried a foldable before, but hopefully there will be some other unique touches that will mean even Galaxy Z Fold owners feel a little jealous.
