Lusting after Sabre but on an IKEA budget?

As a homes journalist, I'm constantly lusting after chic and expensive home furnishings that are way out of my budget. But seeing as I'm getting married this year, I've been tempted to put one such brand on my wedding registry list: Sabre. The French flatware brand is chic, timeless and sustainable, with removable acrylic rivets that you could switch out from home to home, or trend to trend.

But even though there's a reason this lust-worthy flatware brand will cost you $479 for a 20-piece set, that doesn't mean it's an option for most people. And fortunately, if you want the Sabre look on a budget, IKEA has come out with the ideal solution.

IKEA's new DOFTSKÖLD 20-piece flatware set costs $39, meaning it's less than a tenth of the price of Sabre, and it's got that same signature riveted handle style, which will bring the elevated French bistro style to your flat-pack kitchen.

Working out at under $2 per piece, this $39 set from IKEA is a pack of 20 and features four sets of a knife, fork, spoon, dessert fork and tea spoon. It comes in two colors, including this chic muted cream.

How they compare

There are some notable differences between these two flatware sets, the first being the shape of the utensils themselves.

For Sabre, you get a shiny stainless steel finish and a sharp dinner knife that could cut through the rarest of French fillet steaks. By contrast, the IKEA set is more dull and blunt, and will likely stand up to day-to-day use going through the dishwasher.

However, the riveted cream handles certainly do evoke the same French elegance, and the acrylic coating will provide a comfortable and smooth dining experience for the whole family.

I've had flatware from IKEA for over five years and it's still performing faultlessly, so there's no reason why the DOFTSKÖLD won't provide the same longevity. However, the Sabre set, which is $479 at Williams Sonoma, has a more modern and angular handle shape which the discerning interiors lover may prefer.

But for $39 versus $479, I know where my money is going!
