With summer almost in full swing, my mind is on outdoor cookouts and getting outside to enjoy the sunshine at every opportunity. Rather than being stuck inside in my kitchen, cooking in the heat, I’m looking at buying an outdoor grill.

There’s a stack of expensive grills to choose from, including the premium Weber 2025 Spirit EP-425 gas grill, which tops our best grills buying guide, but it comes at a hefty price. And although I appreciate what it offers, I’m looking for a budget buy.

That’s why, when I spotted the portable SoluppgÅng cast-iron grill for just $79 at IKEA, I knew I had to add it to my basket. Aside from being a great price, it’s also small and portable, so it won’t take up precious space in my backyard, and I can pack it up and take it on outdoor adventures.

This compact grill is perfect for use in your yard or for taking to the park. It's ideal for grilling small pieces of food, such as meat, fish and skewered vegetables, as the grate is designed to prevent the food from falling into the hot coals below.

IKEA’s cast-iron grill measures 16 ⅞ (L) x 8 ¼ (W) x 7 ⅞ (H), and although its compact dimensions mean it’s not large enough for big summer parties, it’s ideal for everyday use and to pack up and go. Rather than using a disposable BBQ when you’re away from home, IKEA’s option will save on waste.

Benefit from cast-iron cooking

Made from cast iron, this grill has unmatched heat retention — holding heat much longer than other materials. It spreads heat evenly, meaning you don’t get any cold spots on your grill. The intense heat also helps you achieve dark grill marks on your food and crispy, caramelized burgers and steaks.

What’s more, the vents increase airflow to the bowl, raising the grilling temperature and cooking the food more quickly.

You won’t need to worry about pre-seasoning the cast-iron, as this BBQ has already been treated with vegetable soybean oil and is ready to use. But once stains or corrosion occur, IKEA recommends cleaning the grill with steel wool or an abrasive sponge before reseasoning the cast iron with a food-grade oil.

If you’re looking to buy a budget BBQ and have limited outdoor space, I think IKEA’s budget buy is a pretty good choice.
