1. Get more juice out of citrus fruits

Whether you enjoy eating fresh oranges, or prefer to make your own juice with one of the best juicers, you’ll want to get every last drop from your citrus fruits.

Luckily, your microwave can help you do so. Simply microwave your oranges or lemons for about 10-20 seconds before squeezing them. The heat will soften the membranes inside your fruit, allowing the juice to flow more freely.

What’s more, keep your orange peels if you want to banish mosquitoes. Such pests tend to be put off by the strong, citrusy smell and will keep away.

2. Soften hard bread or bakeries

There’s nothing worse than your favorite loaf of artisan bread or baked treats turning rock hard after some time in your storage bin.

Thankfully, you can revert them to their former selves in seconds: Wrap your slice or bakery in a damp cloth before microwaving for around 10 seconds This will soften the hardened bread, and give it a much-needed revival.

3. Make garlic peeling easier

If you love cooking with garlic, the tricky part is peeling the outer layer of skin off. Alongside using one of the best garlic presses, it turns out your microwave can make the task easier.

Simply put the unpeeled cloves in the microwave for about 20 seconds. The heat will soften and lift the outer skins, making it easier to peel off. What’s more, this will save you from having smelly hands!

4. Proof bread

Nothing beats the smell and taste of homemade bread, and proofing yeast can usually take over an hour. However, you can do it in just 15 minutes by using your microwave as a ‘proofing box’.

Start by placing dough in a lightly greased ovenproof bowl. Next, heat up a bowl of water for about four minutes, until boiling.

Once the water is heated, place the covered bowl of bread dough in the microwave, along with the water, and close the door. The aim is for the steam in the closed microwave to create a warm, humid environment, similar to that of a bread dough proofer. You should see the bread slowly rise after 15 minutes or so.

If you’re a regular baker, however, you might want to invest in one of the best bread machines for that perfect loaf in less time.

5. Drying herbs

Whether you’re growing herbs indoors or picking them up at the store, it’s always disheartening when the freshness starts to fade.

But rather than throwing them out, you can dry herbs such as parsley or basil in the microwave. Just place on a paper towel before microwaving for about 30 seconds.

The heat should be enough to dry out your herbs and extend their shelf life.
