‘Even I was crying by the end of it’: ‘The Sheep Detectives’ star on the film’s surprising emotional impact

I went into “The Sheep Detectives” expecting a light, family-friendly mystery about Hugh Jackman shepherding sheep who solve a murder, and it is very funny in that regard, but it also surprised me emotionally. By the end, I was teary-eyed alongside a sobbing audience and my dad. While the mystery is familiar, it shines through themes of grief, belonging, and growth. The film is charming, hilarious and far more emotionally resonant than expected, with a genuinely satisfying twist.

If you didn’t already know, “The Sheep Detectives” follows a shepherd who reads detective novels to his sheep and is found dead in a quiet countryside village. A flock of unusually clever sheep, led by Lily, decides to investigate the case themselves, uncovering human suspects, hidden family ties, and a baffled local police force while finding clues only they seem able to understand.

Chris O’Dowd voices Mopple, a Merino sheep who helps the flock investigate the shepherd’s murder with humor and unexpected insight. He stands out in the flock because he uniquely remembers everything, unlike the other sheep, who can conveniently forget distressing events. That memory makes him emotionally grounded, often acting as the group’s most reflective and truth-aware presence during the investigation.

I sat down with Chris O’Dowd to discuss the emotional impact of “The Sheep Detectives”, its exploration of grief and connection, and his experience voicing Mopple in this charming mystery-comedy movie.

‘They did a beautiful job making these characters come alive’

During the interview, I asked O’Dowd about the film’s emotional impact and how he felt about the important themes woven throughout.

“It’s lovely being part of something that really gets to people viscerally. I went to a screening with my kids last week and I was crying at the end of it. It’s nice to be part of something that’s powerful enough to move you like that," he said. "I can’t really take any credit for it — they’ve done such a beautiful job bringing these characters to life, with a gorgeous setting and great pacing. It just feels really gratifying to be part of something that can make people cry.”

I then told O’Dowd that, during my screening, the children were laughing and reacting throughout the movie, while the adults were the ones left sobbing by the end. I even admitted that people behind me were “literally sobbing,” while I was trying my best to hold back tears myself.

He said, “There are some great gags in it too, but it does get slightly sad towards the end — or maybe happy. It’s a lot of happy tears, really.”

“The Sheep Detectives” follows a fairly familiar mystery formula, but its simplicity makes the story easy for younger audiences to connect with. The movie truly stands out in the way it gently explores themes like grief, personal growth, and accepting those seen as outsiders. It handles these ideas with real sincerity and tenderness, giving the story enough emotion to tug at your heartstrings. I asked O’Dowd what themes resonated with him the most after filming.

“My character, Mopple the sheep, is really the only one who remembers things, and that resonated with me a little bit. Not because I have a particularly great memory, but because we all curate our own lives in a way. We carry certain memories with us because we want to, and sometimes we hold onto things we’d probably rather forget.

“I thought that was a really interesting theme in the movie — that these sheep can choose to forget everything. Obviously, we as humans can’t really do that, and yet we still try to in our own way. I think that’s a fascinating thing to explore.”

“The Sheep Detectives” may be a murder mystery on paper, but at its core, it’s a touching story about loss, family, and finding the courage to move forward. Funny, charming, and surprisingly emotional, it’s the kind of family movie that leaves both kids and adults teary-eyed. Don’t be sheepish, go and watch this on the big screen!
