Some products just reach a certain level of ubiquity, regardless of whether they've been replaced by a newer model. In fact, they find a new level of appreciation due to a price drop. That's the Sony WH-1000XM4.
Right now, these tried-and-trusted over-ear headphones are down a massive 48% at Amazon for October Prime Day — bringing them in at $188. If you're in the U.K., you'll also see a discount, albeit just 10% down to £179.
It's not the lowest price we've ever seen for these headphones, but it's still a solid deal.
Stunningly comfortable and with top-quality sound, the WH-1000XM4 might not be the current generation of Sony's XM headphones — but they're sure a wicked pair to slip on your head. The case in the box remains one of the very best as well. This is the new lowest price for the XM4, making for some big savings.
Price check: $188 @ Best Buy
The WH-1000XM4s are also reduced over in the U.K., although just by 10%. But still, a saving is a saving and these are a solid pair of cans.
At this point, the XM4s have already been supplanted not once, but twice. First, we saw the Sony WH-1000XM5 arrive and then, earlier this year, the Sony WH-1000XM6 joined the party. None of that matters because you'll be spending over double the price to get the latest model.
Even several years later, the WH-1000XM4 hold up well. There's a premium-feeling matte coating on the plastic construction and plus earcups that stay comfortable even during long listening sessions.
Speaking of long sessions, you'll get 30 hours of battery life with ANC on and 38 hours with it off. The noise cancellation and smart controls are among the best we'd tried back when we reviewed these headphones a few years ago. And while they may have been dethroned as our pick for the best wireless headphones, we can't help but recommend them at this price.
It's not the lowest we've ever seen — they've dropped as far as $129 in the past — you should absolutely consider picking them up. At this price, they would serve as an excellent backup or traveling pair of headphones to take with you on trips. Sony thought of that, too — there's a nice carry case included with each pair.
