Walmart is turning to artificial intelligence to change the way we shop online. In a newly announced partnership with OpenAI, the retail giant is bringing its full product catalog to ChatGPT, letting customers browse, plan and purchase through natural conversation, complete with an Instant Checkout feature.

This move means you’ll soon be able to ask ChatGPT something like “Help me plan dinner for the week” or “Restock my cleaning supplies,” and it will not only recommend products from Walmart, but also help you buy them on the spot. No more scrolling through endless search results — just chat and go.

“For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses,” said Walmart CEO Doug McMillon. “That’s about to change. There is a native AI experience coming that is multi-media, personalized and contextual.”

This is part of a broader shift Walmart is calling agentic commerce — where AI evolves from a passive tool to a proactive assistant. Instead of waiting for you to ask, it can anticipate needs, offer suggestions and make your shopping experience feel a lot more intuitive.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the partnership is about making everyday tasks easier. “We’re excited to work with Walmart to simplify daily shopping. It’s just one of the ways AI will become part of people’s everyday lives.”

Walmart isn’t new to AI. The company already uses it behind the scenes to speed up everything from fashion production (cutting timelines by 18 weeks) to customer service (reducing resolution times by up to 40%). It’s also rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise internally and offering OpenAI Certifications to its workforce — part of an effort to boost AI literacy among its employees.

But Walmart is quick to clarify that this isn’t about replacing human workers. Instead, the company says it’s focused on using AI to remove friction, not connection, making everyday tasks simpler, smarter and more convenient.

With this partnership, Walmart is doubling down on its promise to combine low prices, fast delivery, and now, smart AI to redefine what shopping looks like in the AI era.
