Man Thinks He's in Silent Hill, Blacks Out Hospital

There are a lot of blacked out hospitals in Silent Hill.

Video games are getting more realistic and lifelike with each new development, but one patient suffering from a psychosis in a Dutch hospital was truly convinced that he was playing in a real life Silent Hill.
35-year-old Jan H. found his way down to the basement of the Sophia hospital in Zwolle, where he found a number of levers and switches that controlled the power to the building. The man thought that, by operating the levers and switches, he would win a toothbrush.
While it's unknown whether or not Jan H. eventually got his toothbrush, the power outage caused elevators to stall and patients who were on respiratory machines to be assisted manually. Fortunately, no patients suffered any lasting consequences, according to 24oranges.
A court on Tuesday found Jan H. not guilty of his actions because he did not know the consequences of his actions.

ive never played any of the silent hill games ever - time i do some catching up i think - toothbrushes are awesome!
who was supposed to be watching this guy? someone give that man a toothbrush
lol. I don't know if this is suppose to be funny or not considering he was a mental patient....
I'd geek out too if I was tripping in a sterile, bright, loud place like a hospital.
Poor chap must have felt like he was in hell.
and this place is unguarded? or locked? what kind of... sigh.
both
Cue anti-gaming activists! Oh wait...he was mentally ill this time, instead of drunk....oh wait...still isn't the games fault....
** and this is a good example of a title that doesn't accuse the games, Thank You Sir.
Why are those switches accessible to the public?
Usually mechanics or Doctors always have a magnetic ID card with them to unlock the doors.
... and it is always the same author to write these articles... at least this time it was not the games foult... sigh...sigh...
Apparently they have never heard of a lock.
EPIC FAIL!
they let the electrical panel to a hospital (how many patients are on life support?) unguarded and let a mental patient unattended seriously does anyone think anymore? at least they could have put a goddam lock on that door.
why was a guy with serious psychological problems have access to video games like Silent Hill?
give him Wii Sport....
Wait, is there actual any relationship to the man and Silent Hill at all....It doesn't even say he played the game Silent Hill, the relationship is that he was in a hospital and Silent Hill has hospital levels. So...
A= Mentally ill is in hospital
B= Hospitals can shut down power
C= Mentally ill can shut down power
A=C
Not...
A= Man is in hospital
B= Hospitals are in Silent Hill
C= Man is in silent hill....
A is clearly not equal to C.

I was thinking the same thing. I found an article that explains it slightly better, especially if you keep in mind that this guy was tripping balls at the time.

Now you see, this is another case where political correctness has caused life endangering situations.
The man is clearly mentally ill, a loony if you like and should have been under strict supervision at all time, locked up even, or at least given a liquid cosh for pacification purposes.
However, we can no longer call these ‘patients’ mental, they are now suffering from ’learning difficulties’ which completely hides and disguises the fact that the ‘patient’ is a danger to the public.
As there are now no mentally ill people, there is no need for Governments to provide institutions and ‘patients’ are released into the ‘care in the community’ where they are free to express all their wants and desires on an unsuspecting public, sometimes to tragic consequences.

No it was locked, he just found the rusty key in the alternate dimension
Give hi ma tooth brush , he needs one obviously.
LMAO this story is FTW !!!. Wow, I wonder if this guy sees the hospital in ashes, and flames.... now that would be freaky as hell.
Marcus,
very poor reporting. Obviously no real link between the guy and the game and you make no effort to highlight this.
You work for Toms and you want to increase peoples perception of games affecting real life? Whose side are you on?

He'd probably flip out because none of the characters have legs...
Interactive entertainment on a whole new level...
Could have been worse though, if he were to think he was in Half-Life and started wielding a crowbar at unsuspecting zomb... I mean patients...

I guess "Insane man thinks he would win toothbrush, blacks out hospital" wouldn't have received as many clicks as the currently misleading title.
Actually, never mind that. That accurate title I just made up is actually much more interesting than the current misleading one that was clearly written in a way to pander to clicks.
From the verdict (LJN number BK1516 at rechtspraak.nl): "Suspect told both the police and the court that he thought he was in the video game Silent Hill, and that he thought that pulling switches was a puzzle he had to solve as part of the game, and that he did not know the real purpose of those switches."
The verdict is rather prosaic I am afraid, but it does confirm the headline.
shouldn't there be a cage over the equipment that controls the power?
many buildings that I have done networking for have had the power set to where you need a key in order to use it.
What's up with all these video game headlines...I'm getting sick of this. It's not the games, it's the 'medical conditions' people have that play them...People should read the disclaimer just like anything else.
Game or no game a lot of bad things happen in the basement of any hospital.
