Yet Another iPhone 4G Leaks Out, Gets Dissected

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Surprise, surprise, the next iPhone looks to be packing the Apple A4 processor as well.

It looks like the iPhone fourth-generation that Gizmodo bought wasn't the only unit that had escaped the hands of Apple. A nearly identical, and likely newer iPhone prototype was found, prodded and dissected in Vietnam and present on a site named Taoviet.vn.

Perhaps even more impressive is a new teardown of this prototype device that shows an Apple-branded chip inside that looks a lot like the A4 found inside the iPad. While it shouldn't be surprising that Apple is keeping the same processor design for another device, which simplifies things for the iPhone OS and keeps costs low for Apple.

Overall, this leak appears to be a closer to a final, finished product that the one we saw from before. The two bottom screws that were on the dock connector on the previous prototype and the previous iPhones are gone and the device now says 16GB instead of XXGB.

Check out the pictures and the hands-on video below:

iPhone 4G in Vietnam

Our news director Tuan Nguyen supplied a 'real-time' translation while watching the video above, which I've copied below:

  • this is the new iphone
  • this TV looks smaller
  • it  feels sure
  • it feels hard
  • the back feels hard
  • the front is hard
  • there's a camera on front and back
  • on the front, we can see the camera is next to the speaker
  • this new machine is longer
  • but thinner
  • two buttons on the side for volume
  • the buttons are separate
  • here is the sim stick
  • here are the stereo speakers
  • i haven't opened it
  • probably have to pry it open
  • this picture screen
  • is locked
  • someone didn't report in
  • and apple probably locked it
  • it's thinner than the old iphone
  • but longer
  • feels longer
  • is longer
  • but thinner
  • when you hold it
  • here's a microsim
  • a small sim
  • on the back
  • it's very certain
  • very certain

Even being in Vietnam, they won't be safe from the Apple Cronies that are going to come after them.

So..wait. If the 4G is using the A4, does that mean that it's is just as powerful as the iPad?

An A4 in the iPhone would give it some processing grunt compared to previous models - perhaps this is why Apple finally put pseudo-multitasking into iPhone OS 4 because they had a CPU better suited to handle it coming up.

Still getting the HTC Desire though lol

I'm so tempted to send this to Apple Corp asking them if it really: "feels hard/the back feels hard"

No. The iPhone is using a severely crippled A4 processor. Apple didn't want the same heat problems that many high end Android phones have. If Apple had used the very same A4 processor that the iPad has in the iPhone then the iPhone would generate more heat than Snapdragon based Android phones.

It is a sexy phone, but I am still 99% sure I'm moving to an Android phone next month.

Frankly, nobody should care about any new Apple related phones unless Apple ditches AT&T outright. For now, my BlackBerry Tour is the greatest business phone ever. And Verizon does a great job supplying service.

I'm looking forward to apples usual overhyped press release for this phone, it looks more or less the same as the old iphone just with a front facing camera (which has been standard on any half decent phone for years now) i thought that slot on the side might of been for a micro sd card but i guess that would be expecting too much, and still no flash or user replaceable battery but at least they have a user replaceable sim card.

Look at the nokia N8, 720p hdmi tv out with 5.1 dolby digital plus, 12mp camera with xenon flash, 720p video recording, full web browser with flash support, free lifetime voice guided gps navigation, 16gb internal memory with up to a 32gb micro sd card, bluetooth 3.0, fm transmitter, it also has a front facing camera and a user replaceable battery and sim card.

The iphone 4G, a front facing camera and a new processor, oh and it's thinner.

But i wonder which phone will get the most hype?

There's really nothing special about an A4 besides that it's Apple's first chip in about a decade. But its a 1GHz chip that. Please, we already have 1Ghz in smartphones.
