'Injustice' for Vita Hands-On: Superhero Fighting On-The-Go
DC Comics fighting game "Injustice: Gods Among Us" quickly became one of 2013's best-selling titles, allowing gamers to head into battle with the likes of Superman, Batman and Lex Luthor. Now the game's content-packed "Ultimate" edition is headed to the PlayStation Vita for the first time. We tried out this version to see how the intense superhero combat of "Injustice" holds up on-the-go.
"Injustice: Ultimate Edition" for the Vita packs the entire 30-character roster of its console counterpart, as well as a full story mode and a host of bonus S.T.A.R. Labs mini-games. The "Ultimate" installment comes bundled with all downloadable content previously released for the game, so you'll have access to a host of extra skins and fighters out of the box when the game goes on sale for $39.99 on Tuesday, Nov 12.
During our hands-on time, we played as Nightwing against Batgirl in the game's "Batcave" stage. Character costumes are noticeably less detailed on the Vita version, and game studio NetherRealm removed a few minor objects from the game's backgrounds.
Though some details were missing, gameplay was smooth and responsive on Sony's portable console: We had no issues pulling off the same intricate combos that we'd been practicing for months on the PS3 version. The game's arenas have retained their interactivity. We were able to launch our opponent into a cluster of electrical wires hanging from the ceiling, which is a key fixture of the console version's Batcave.
While we were able to use only the Vita's standard controls in a standard battle, "Injustice" will utilize the system's touch screen in a variety of mini-games within the story mode.
Gamers can already get a portable dose of "Injustice" via the free iOS and Android games, but those are simplified versions built for phones and tablets. Hardcore fighting fanatics can look forward to getting the full experience in portable form when "Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition" launches for the Vita. This complete collection will also be made available for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, and PC.
