ChatGPT analyzed the world’s best golf swings — here are the powerful secrets it found
Learning the ins and outs of top-notch golf swings
I’ll be honest — golf is one of those sports that’s completely out of my wheelhouse.
I’m a casual viewer who’s guilty of only checking in on golf tournaments whenever Tiger Woods steps onto the green to compete. But after getting a peek at this year’s Masters festivities, I gained a better appreciation for just how hard it is to excel at the sport of golf. Seeing the likes of Sam Burns, Rory McIlroy and Wyndham Clark stake their claim during one of the most iconic golf tournaments has been a joy to witness for a first-time onlooker such as myself.
As an AI power user, I do what I always do when it comes to uncharted territory: bring AI into the mix. So, I referred to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity to see each chatbot’s prediction for the ultimate victor of this year’s Masters (one name got the top nod among all of them).
With my interest in the sport growing, now I’m intrigued by the art of the golf swing. With three videos of three top players and their swings on full display, I asked ChatGPT to analyze them and came away all the more wiser about what makes them so great.
Scottie Scheffler
With this prompt (Analyze the golf swing in this video and tell me what makes it one of the best), I turned ChatGPT into a golf expert and asked it to point out the biggest critiques that explain why each golf swing is top-tier. The first video the chatbot examined was a golf swing performed by Scottie Scheffler.
Among the bullet points ChatGPT listed among its thoughts, the main one that stuck out was about its tempo and rhythm: The backswing is smooth and unhurried, while the downswing accelerates naturally. Nothing feels rushed or forced—this is a huge separator from amateur swings. Some of the other observations the chatbot made noted how Scottie’s balance and athletic setup resulted in a stable base and his leg sequencing produces effortless power.
ChatGPT’s biggest takeaway from watching this golf swing was how it was near perfection: What makes this swing one of the best isn’t a flashy move—it’s how little goes wrong. It checks all the boxes - efficient sequencing, a clean plane, controlled tempo and a balanced finish. That combination creates what coaches often call a “repeatable swing”—the real goal at high levels.
Rory McIlroy
The next golf swing that I let ChatGPT study came from Rory McIlroy.
The chatbot started its research notes by stating the following: This is one of those swings that pops because it checks nearly every high-level biomechanical box. The key isn’t just one move—it’s how everything sequences together cleanly.
Some of the points that ChatGPT included in its analysis pointed out McIlroy’s elite tempo, perfect sequencing (from the ground to the hips to the torso to the arms to the club) and his compact, efficient backswing.
As a final statement, the chatbot zeroed in on why the footage of this golf swing stands out: It’s not doing anything flashy—it’s doing everything correctly at once - efficient energy transfer, clean mechanics and no compensations. And that’s rare. A lot of swings look good in one phase. This one looks good in every phase, which is why it feels like “one of the best.”
Cameron Young
The final piece of golf swing footage I presented to ChatGPT highlighted Cameron Young.
The chatbot’s initial thoughts on his golf swing centered around a mix of traditional and modern techniques to excel: This one stands out for a slightly different reason than most “perfect-looking” swings—it blends old-school fluidity with modern efficiency. It doesn’t look forced at any point, which is actually rare.
ChatGPT also acknowledged Young’s swing by pointing out how it’s driven by motion (not positions), his natural weight shift and his free hip rotation. The simple summary the chatbot used to break down Young’s swing made it easier for me to grasp what makes it so great - This swing is great because it lets physics do the work instead of trying to manufacture power. That’s why it looks smooth, effortless and repeatable.
The takeaway
I appreciate ChatGPT for pointing out the intricacies of each golf swing and giving me easy-to-follow descriptions of what makes each one so effective.
What I ended up taking away from this experiment was how the top golf players affect their golf swings by utilizing a winning tempo, properly sequencing their actions through their lower and upper portions of their bodies and finishing strong while staying completely balanced.
I don’t think I’ll ever get to the point where my golf swing is as good as the three players I used ChatGPT to survey. But at least I have a few pointers to refer back to from this experiment for my first time hitting the green.
