Apple Copies Xbox Live/PSN for iPhone OS 4.0

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Multiasking may have been the biggest announcement Apple made about iPhone 4.0 but the company also detailed something else called GameCenter. GameCenter is a social gaming platform for the iPhone that's a little similar to Xbox Live and PSN.

GameCenter contains a set of APIs that allows developers to create apps that incorporate certain social capabilities, like the ability to invite friends to play a game, start a multiplayer game through matchmaking and track achievements and compare high scores on a leader board.

There are thousands of iPhone gaming apps so we're betting a little network where people can get together and play against each other as well as keep track of each other's high scores is going to be scarily popular.

Don't you mean Apple is revolutionizing online gaming by creating a social gaming network? :P Everyone knows Apples copies noone and creates all.

I wish Android had more games...
Developers need to realise that Android will beat the iPhone (more features, lower price, not made by Apple etc.) and make more apps and games for it.

I hate to break it to you, but with the iPhone, they already ARE. They might not be trying to break into the console market, but the iPhone is steadily taking hold as a platform for portable gaming.

Even though they really are just stealing this from Microsoft, it is a good idea to implement on their phone platform.

Yea well, once upon a time everyone thought Apple was a lost cause. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

Also, they should make something similar for Macs.

I'm seriously doubtful anything copied by Apple will not become a popular product.

Yup, they totally invented social game networks. Seriously? Have you not played an online game 10 years ago?

More factual articles please.

So they ripped off MS and Sony... Aren't they suing HTC for "ripping off" there tech? Talk about a hypocritical company!!!! That and Jobs's dumb arse put his foot in his mouth saying that the Android phone has a Pornstore you can download?!?!?! All the Android sites are crying foul and we are now wondering when Google will sue them for false information, and company/platform deification.

Steve even said that only his team has gotten cut and paste correct and only his team has done multitasking correctly. He sure did throw axes all every company today. I cannot wait to see how this pans out!

No one said they invented it. They do however happen to be the most popular and longstanding of such a service, especially when not compared to PCs, making it a fair comparison.

More intelligent comments please.

Smochina, you should lay off the apple koolaid. I happen to work quite often with developers of iphone apps as well as android apps. I hear a lot of envy from the iphone devs about the hoops the android devs don't have to deal with. I haven't heard any envy from the android devs about the iphone platform. I have heard some things from the android devs that they are glad they don't have to deal with though *cough*objective C*cough* ... *cough cough*renewal and expiration of apple certificates to be in the app store*cough cough* ... *cough cough cough*trying to figure out what they did wrong to have their app denied and how to fix it*cough cough cough*

Sorry, don't know whats wrong with me, must be coming down with something.

You've been infected with Applehatism. Nothing to worry about, all logical people have this disease.

Wasn't it Apple who was the one that was always bitching about Microsoft copying off of them? Hypocrites.

Copying... Well it is certainly in the same direction as though other gaming networks but wouldn't you just claim Xbox live as copying Playstation Network as copying Steam? Steam came first, then the rest. Unless I see replica UIs that look the same as the competitors, then yes that is copying.

Smochina :
Pfff, how about you asking developers how crap Android is first? Java apps against native code, that's the first mistake Google did. Secondly, their virtual machine is not even stable and too many different devices make developing on android for independent people a pain. Did I mention how even google people have no clue about some serious stability bugs on their own devices? So yeah, that's why developers stick with Iphone, same resolution devices, just a few devices that are extremely similar, native code, kick ass gpu. And to everybody complaining about Apple refusing applications and charging 30% of the app price you have no idea what mobile games developing and distribution is. With Apple store, you no longer have to deal with stupid carrier rules and stupid DRM implementation because some low life carrier wants his stupid API used, there's no fee on application submission like Brew who charge 1000$ for a second submission after an application failed. You don't have to implement rotate if you don't want to and other stupid stuff, making developers concentrate more on the actual game instead of taking care of stupid rules and so called ergonomics, or having to port the game on every stupid phone every idiot made since the beginning of time.

I don't think you could know less about the subject if you tried...

yea i'd rather an open OS like android then a totally closed one like apple. nothing like paying 500+ bucks for a device that you have to jailbreak to do things you want

I don't know what to say. Really. But I suppose I will use this feature if it's anything like XBL/PSN. Nothing innovative here, but convenient so it seems.

Gameloft stopped developing for Android because the sales on Android were like 400 times lower than on iPhone.

Um..where exactly in the article does it say Apple invented social gaming networks? it doesn't. The first commenter said it as a joke.

Seriously, there's one thing to cry foul about the amount of Apple news on Tom's, it's quite another to totally make shit up in your head as you're reading it.

Tell you what: the next time you see an article about Apple, do me a favour and don't click the link, OK?

You mean Playstation Network copying XBox Live, right? XBL was out well before PSN was, starting with the first XBox.
