Finally: Netflix Confirmed for iPhone, iPod Touch

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Netflix finally confirmed that an iPhone and iPod Touch app is in the works.

With the iPad and its version of Netflix finally out the door, many iPhone and iPod Touch users (including this one) have been wondering about their version of Netflix hitting iTunes. Talk of the Netflix app has been around since last summer, with no real confirmation that the streaming service would ever land on the two devices. But with the release of Apple's iPad and its version of Netflix, it seemed that iPhone and iPod Touch users were left out in the cold.

Just one day before the iPad's launch, Steve Swasey, VP of Corporate Communications for Netflix, posted a blog in regards to the service hitting iPhone. "Terrific response to our news today about Netflix on the iPad," he said regarding Friday's announcement. "For those of you asking whether Netflix will be on the iPhone and iPod Touch: We wouldn't invite you to dinner without planning to serve dessert."

"In other words, we're working on it so stay tuned," he added. As with previous rumors surrounding the Netflix app, it's speculated that the service will be bound by Wi-Fi given its bandwidth-intensive nature. But like many other video-streaming apps, the higher quality video could be locked with Wi-Fi, allowing for lower resolutions of video via a 3G network connection.

As the blog indicates, there's no real set date for Netflix to hit the iPhone and iPod Touch. It's possible that the app is already complete, as is waiting on the iPad thunderstorm to pass.

I'm pretty sure I've seen NR stuff on Netflix. Will Apple ban this app because it can produce porn?

I was stuck at the airport a couple of weeks ago waiting for a flight, surfing public wifi and watching youtube videos. Being able to watch a movie would have been very enjoyable.

There is NR stuff, I just watched one last month called Antichrist, which had tons of full frontal nudity, actually showed a penis penetrating a vagina, full male erections, etc etc. Very graphic. But, if they approved netflix for the ipad, they both share the same software library from the same appstore, so it only would only make sense to allow it on the iphone as well...

then again, making sense & apple is kinda an oxymoron. Go figure.

I could care less about streaming movies on my iPhone, but what would be nice is a reliable and easy way to manage my Netflix queue on my iPhone.

when i had an iphone i often watched standup comedy on youtube to pass time. I would use netflix for sure.

The screen is small, your not going to watch the rocky marathon but you certainly could watch a movie on a plane to burn a couple hours.

Um. Why does anyone watch real movies on an iPhone? I mean, for real. Companies keep selling their 'movie-capable hd thingamajigger' by showing it play movies.... besides short things on youtube, why the HELL would anyone use an iPhone or other tiny screen instead of a laptop with a 15-17in 1080p screen?

I'm guessing this will only be in the USA?

and @rogueex:L not everyone has a laptop with a 180p screen. if you think everyone constantly has access to a large screen then you should rethink that question.
its easy to be at work, the train station, a friends house etc and have nothing to do. if you have an ipod and acess to a net connection, why not watch a movie?
i think you'll find that most movies are just the same on a small screen or a large screen, provided you have a pair of headphones.

Have you actually tried it yet? Have you ever flown internationally on a plane that has built in tv screens in the seats? They are usually not much bigger than an iphone!

I used to be like you, and wrote off the idea as silly b/c of the screen size. Then I got an iphone and started watching TV shows on youtube while at work. Never once did I even notice how small the screen was. You get used to it real quick. Beats lugging around 20lbs of laptop gear. Cellphones are surprisingly capable media players.
