4. Dell Axim X5

The Axim is Dell's first product for the Pocket PC market. The version we tested uses a 400 MHz XScale processor. There is also a 300 MHz version selling for less.
The Axim's performance places it at the top of the group. The reason for this excellent performance is to be found in the very fast graphics component. As with the Zayo, the user can alter the CPU speed as an energy-saving measure when carrying out less demanding tasks. The removable Lithium Ion battery keeps the Axim going for over four and a half hours. Less satisfactory with regard to ergonomics, on the other hand, is the maximum display brightness of only 45 cd/m2.
The PDA offers expansion options via SD and MMC cards (side-mounted slot) and CompactFlash cards (top-mounted slot). Less impressive is the location of the jog dial button, halfway up the side. Using it with one hand requires the user to contort his left thumb in a most unnatural way.
The Axim X5 is very fast, very well equipped, and offers flexible expansion options. For price conscious Pocket PC buyers who are not too concerned about weight (200 g), the Axim is a sound buy.
