Dell today said that its next-generation notebooks will integrate Qualcomm’s Gobi chip, which can connect users to both EV-DO (3G) and HSDPA mobile broadband networks. According to the company, the technology will be available on upcoming Latitude, Precision, and consumer laptops.
There was no information on availability and pricing of these models.
Previously available only by using upgrades such as ExpressCards, EV-DO connectivity can provide users true wireless Internet access by utilizing cellular networks. But don’t think that performance is slouchy. EV-DO cards can offer users in excess of 2Mbit/sec. transfer rates, which are typically faster than most average broadband connections. Verizon’s V740 ExpressCard, based on Qualcomm’s chips, is currently rated as the top EV-DO ExpressCard available.
In related news, Apple is expected to begin production of its next-generation iPhone with integrated 3G connectivity. Current generation iPhones are based on 2.5G or EDGE. While EDGE offers users the ability to connect at decent speeds, browsing and downloading experience is barely at the usable level. The 3G iPhone is highly anticipated and is expected to arrive at the end of Q2 this year.
