Modern Warfare 2 Virus Infects Xbox Live

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Someone figured out an exploit to unlock unlimited ammo, however now it's spreading across Xbox Live like a virus.

There's something fishy going on with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. A few sources deem the situation as a quasi-virus infestation, spreading across Xbox Live and infecting gamers playing Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer matches online. Like an epidemic, it started at one source--presumably a modder--and is now taking over the network, living in the console's cache as it follows player after player, infecting other unsuspecting gamers in every joined match.

But don't worry: this virus won't brick your console's HDD. In fact, some gamers may take it as an early Christmas present, granting unlimited ammo for all weapons, and providing nonexistent loading times. That's definitely not something to cry about, however this "gift" won't go away: it remains no matter what private match you join. Obviously, this type of "cheat" can create a problem in overall gameplay balance, perhaps even making the matches unplayable.

However Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling said on his Twitter page that the problem is being addressed, and that patches are currently in the works. "It'll be posted on the forums in the new Status Update forum at the top," Bowling said, referring to the latest update on the fix. "I'll link to it here though so you know when it's posted."

Players who come across this "infectious" exploit will need to disconnect from Xbox Live and reboot the console in order to get rid of the problem, according to Kotaku. Currently there's no information on how this exploit works, or if its causing any real underlying damage or security breaches.

Hmmm so if I find out I have unlimited ammo I am to reboot my system and "fix" the "issue".... LOL I give that like a 1 in 1,000 chance of that happening.

I do not own a 360 but if I did and I was playing this online I would be happy to have this glitch happen to me lol

Of course my Xbox wouldn't be affected by this at all. Don't know if I have bad luck or good luck.

Wait... What? I thought consoles were superior to computers... They can get viruses?

OK enough sarcasm. So is the next thing to come out for compu... (oops) I mean consoles are anti-virus programs?

Heh... To think that something like a virus could come to a console... And thanks to a system Microsoft designed... lol.And don't give me that "but it was Infinity Ward / Activision 's fault", because it's spreading on the MS Live Network bypassing it's security model (if there's any). I'll only give the fact that it ain't a virus per sé, but still applies the term "infection".Cheers! xD!

If you read the article, they are calling it an virus because of how it spreads, not something that was actually written by someone to exploit it. It is a glitch that developed that loads into your xbox when you come across it in matches. So your pointing out that it is a Microsoft product getting a virus is stupid.

From the experience I've had with console players....they will praise this like the best thing since sliced bread. What's not to love? Other than making a game unplayable.

I can already imagine MW2 console players putting a couple of fans in every side of the Xbox and adding a Honda Power Generator for as long as they can to enjoy this so blessed virus.

Or maybe IW can remotely restart the consoles from the IW ( Which i Don't think so)

I can imagine the security patch (IW-KB43ll - security update that address a serious flaw that could allow an attacker do a remote code execution and thereby taking full possession of the user's Xbox Live account including his money and his MW2 license) Virus side effects: unlimited ammo for a while.)

Well, it is funny though, let'see what happens.

I actually find it funny that the PC version hasn't been plagued with any of the problems like Javelin Exploit w or this for that matter...Mind you we do have hackers every now and then (Or so some say) but i mean you just leave the game and find another one and your g2g.

I hope they find out where this virus originated from and put this person behind bars for like 5 years or so. I'm so tired of all these cheaters and hackers that i hope we start seeing some of them dragged behind cars.............

Are you serious? It's just a game...

LOL, virus?? UH it is a glitch in the game. Ya know.. the CHEATS that plagues xbox live.. My question is, why didnt their punkbuster equivilant. (name escapes me).. why didnt it catch this?? And it loads in an xbox's cache.. BUT it is repeatable.. meaning good luck stoping this one. I can just see the next xploit comming.. ps3's and xbox 360's that are online, will get a trojan, and become the 40MIL node spammer bots.

This is EXACTLY why Microsoft banned modders from XBox Live. I believe I mentioned that exactly this could happen if they did not in an earlier post.

And the XBox is a PC. Any computer device that runs on software can get a virus. The reason consoles typically do not is because they are closed ecosystems. Having the ability for anyone to write code to a device, upload it, and distribute it to anyone, is what enables a virus to spread. You cannot do that on the XBox without modding. Same on the Wii. And the same on the iPhone.

We stopped playing MW2 until the patch gets worked out. I've noticed Halo has 5 times as many people playing now than they did a week ago.

P2P multiplayer gaming at its greatest, who coundn't have seen this comming ? Be happy this only gave a boon, the next time your console HDD is formated. Dedicated servers were are you for atleast PC, leaving your rig way less exposed!

This doesn't sound like a virus...it sounds like a coding glitch or a developer cheat that got activated "accidentally" ... Piss poor development activision et al...

@Yuka: So, with your logic, we cannot blame ill-intended programmers for viruses. We must blame the internet for allowing the spreading of the said virus. In fact, let's go further and blame Al Gore, inventor of the mighty intertron!

all i can do is wish i could quote the idiot ceo that said this would protect users againced cheating when we decided to not put in dedicated servers and doom our game to fail in the long run.. i really really really wish i could see his face now when he has to explain why his no dedicated servers modle just failed miserably in the main area they pushed it on.

btw sidran its on the internet its as closed as a wide open door ffs.

And it is not even happening on PC (where the bad customers are...) re-LOL !!!

It really sounds like some shoddy ass programing more than anything else. Not surprising as they didn't even really seem to try that much while coding MW2 as all they did was strip features and slap on some polish.

@Ryric:

A virus is any program/software that interferes with the regular functioning of the device...which is what this has done. It's also spreading like wildfire, which is another major characteristic of a virus.

So with that being said, its a virus. The abilities that you're granted aren't accessible through normal game play and requires an altercation of the coding.

Sounds like an awesome virus though. Lol.
