Nintendo plans to move along with the progression of technology, however an analyst believes an HD Wii will appear next year.

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Prachter is predicting that Nintendo will introduce an HD Wii--or perhaps the Wii Plus--next year. He said that consumers will pass up the current Nintendo console for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 because they offer more feature rich gameplay and better graphics. This will definitely hold true once Microsoft launches Project Natal and Sony unleashes its motion controller next year.

But while that's all great in theory, does Nintendo even plan to move into HD? Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto talked about this progression during a "roundtable" Q&A session held yesterday in New York City. Naturally, Miyamoto didn't reveal any secrets about potential new hardware, however he did acknowledge that Nintendo games will move along with "the progression of technology."

As both Industry Gamers and Michael Prachter speculate, Nintendo is no doubt looking into HD. After all, HDTVs are far more common now than they were during the launch of the Nintendo Wii. Prachter said that the majority of households will have HDTVs by the end of 2010. But you can't tell Miyamoto that graphics are just as important as gameplay. In his book, the latter comes first.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with pretty graphics, and if I'm a consumer that has an HDTV, I'd want to be able to play my games with nice graphics too," said Miyamoto. "And I think as we've seen the penetration rates for HDTV increase, we're going to see video games and Nintendo's games move along in step with the progression of technology. But what I don't think is necessarily true is that the graphics itself is something that's going to make the gameplay experience better. So we're still going to focus on the gameplay, but we'll take advantage of the technology as it comes out."

I'm still confused as to weather this will be a whole new console, or if it will be an incremental upgrade like the DSi...?

probably won't look very good. The wii doesn't have a great amount of processing power. I realized this after playing some of the same games on Xbox and ps3..

"So we're still going to focus on the gameplay"

Can the current hardware for the Wii even handle rendering over 480p? The last game I played had noticeable lag anytime anything remotely taxing occurred (Mario Party for the Wii).

I highly doubt it. The thing prints money, and it was only released 3 years ago. After just giving it a price drop, I think it'll still be around at least a couple years.

Personally I think gameplay is more important and that graphics should be used to enhance the experience.

Derr... obviously you'd have to have new hardware for this.

Refer to my above statement.

You are just retarded... clearly there hasn't been an announcement of your so-called "hard-in-stone, release-date-announced Wii HD" at ALL yet. You must be one of the few lucky "insiders" that Miyamoto tells all his secrets to. To you three, I say FAIL.

If they keep they same basic concept and increase horsepower (CPU + GPU), it could work for them. I assume they'll have more advanced motion control in the future as well like Sony and MS.

About Damn Time!! My god, everything else I have goes through the HDMI inputs on my stereo EXCEPT my Wii which has to go through the component inputs, and that's for some pretty weak 480p!

Yes, game play is more important than graphics, but not by much. I play Tiger woods 10 with Wii motion more than any game, but the graphics suck. Dont get me wrong, I love the Wii, but the games could be some much more enjoyable with some 1080p graphics. My PC looks 10 years ahead of the Wii. I think Miyamoto should try Crysis on a descent PC to see how is Wii graphics are poopy cacas.

If what is being said about the DS is true, I SERIOUSLY doubt this will happen. Supposedly, the design and everything is finalized and the deal is done with NVidia. Of course both are just speculation and rumors.

Prachter is wrong a lot, so...

What's the the picture...
wii HD... pft they are late. By next year they should drop the price another $50 or create better bundle if they want to compete with x360 & ps3 (both with motion sensor)

Oh they can just put in a chip to automatically upscale the image and then call in the Wii HD. No sense in spending more money to upgrade the GPU just to output to HD TVs as games would still need to run on the original Wiis. Nintendo still actually makes money on selling just the Wii itself, unlike Microsoft or Sony which loose money when you buy their machine, so I wouldn't expect any new systems from Nintendo soon.

The next generation of Nintendo might be the first runner in the next cycle. X360 and P(o)S3 will extended well into 2012. I could see Nintendo getting a jump late 2011 with their next console - a true HD set. It'll be fully backwards compatible and have better controls and maybe a new controller device... I'm hoping or some sort of "real" Power Glove that uses your fingers.

Bottom line, its gameplay that rules the day. Nintendo has focused on the group gaming idea, the party machine. FPS are a dime a dozen - shooting Nazi, Aliens, Zombies, Commandos etc. If you've played one, you've play a dozen. Nintendo shines when it has different types of games. Mario Kart is different than Mario Galaxy is different from Mario Party.

If the only games that I played were FPS, yes then I'd want high graphic quality and details running at 1080p... but come on, there are more than just FPS games.

I agree that gameplay comes before graphics, but the graphics bar has been set by the current gen of consoles (Xbox360 and PS3). They have to be at least at that bar or higher for a 'Next Gen' console.

In other words, if the next version of Wii Bowling has jaggies and doesn't use ample anti-aliasing, I will not buy it.

Is there any way that, like the old video chipset hype, Tom's could stop reporting analyst opinion as news?

What game play? holding a stick and weld it around like an idiot ? Cant do crap with it. and its outdated graphics hurts my eyes. Oh yes I have a wii, and its been collecting dust for almost 2 years.oh yeah. Wii is garbage.

Sure, its graphics aren't as good, but they work.
If you want good graphics, go spend 2k on a computer, otherwise, the Wii works just fine.

you sound like the rest of the lazy @$$'s who'd rather sit on a couch and tap buttons all day then do any physical activity at all.

also if the graphics hurt your eyes you either need a thicker pair of glasses or need to get your head checked

it takes more than a motion control system to emulate the success of the wii. for starters, your console has to be the cheapest, and you also have to be the company that makes mario and pokemon.

sad, but its true.

If console maker wants really upgrade their GPU it should have at least DX11 type of abilities (most propably they will be more like a hybrid between DX11 and DX12). And at this moment DX11 compatible GPU's are a little bit too expensive for really cheap consoles. Megamanx00 can be right about upscaler at this time. Real CPU + GPU upgrade are still a couple of years away. IMHO
But if (I really doupt) Nitendo can put up real DX11 compatible console next year, it would put some pressure on Sony and Microsoft, but I still think that it would be too expensive at this moment.
It is nice to see how expensive low price ATI 5650 and dowgraded Ferni GPU's from Nvidia are next year. If they are near 50$ maybe...

You are so wrong, where are you Sources? Microsoft has been making Profit on the 360 lately, your statement is true when it was released back in 2005!

Reason Nintendo Wii made huge sales was because it's Motion Controller was a huge new Idea. The idea was good but Nintendo intended the motionplus to be what the Wiimote isn't. As of now Wii sales have slowdown and even the PS3 has surpassed it in monthly sales.
