Man Charged for Attempt to Corrupt Terrorism DB
A Colorado man has been charged with two counts of attempting to intentionally damage a protected computer. The man had tried to corrupt TSA databases containing information tied to the war on terror.
Douglas James Duchak, 46, of Colorado Springs has pleaded not guilty to charges that say he tried to corrupt Transportation Security Administration databases. Duchak worked for the TSA at the Colorado Springs Operations Center (CSOC) from at 2004 to 2009 as a data analyst. Duchak's job was to update TSA computers with new information from the federal government's Terrorist Screening Database and the United States Marshal's Service Warrant Information Network.
In October 2009 Duchak was told that he would be let go at the end of the month. Several days later, he is alleged to have planted malicious coding in the CSOC server with the intention of causing damage to the database. The indictment says that the following day, Duchak intentionally tried to cause damage to the server that contain the Terrorist Screening Database.
Duchak's actions cost CSOC $5,000 and if completed would have caused damage affecting a computer used by the U.S. government in furtherance of national security.
"TSA's Office of Inspection and IT Security worked quickly to uncover and respond to this potential threat in partnership with agents from the DHS Office of Inspector General and the FBI," said David Holmes, TSA Assistant Administrator, Office of Inspection. "This is an excellent example of how TSA and law enforcement work together to ensure the security of information technology that is critical to protecting the nation's transportation system."
If convicted, Duchak faces a maximum of 10 years in federal prison, and a fine of up to $250,000 for each of the two counts.

The world is stupid.
Then again, "two wrongs don't make a right."
Maybe he should apply to FBI.
I am not a fan of harsh punishments, but this sounds a whole lot like treason to me.
How did this cost $5000 is the code didn't even execute???
If they already found the code ( I take it that's how they knew about it) then why were some many agencies brought in to work on it?
Remove the code... done.
Threats from the outside, and threats from the inside. TSA must be scrapped, and rebuilt from the ground up. Focus should be placed on highly trained, and stable employees.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do.
Of course mister Duchak sound like a douchebag, but when you sack people in these positions isn't it a good idea to revoke all their network privileges and then escort them out the door right away? Just a thought!
For a second there, I thought some one hacked in to a terrorist data base containing info about their operations lol.
The title is misleading

Me too! And as I clicked the link, I was thinking, "Charged? Why wasn't he given a reward!?!" Glad we're not that crazy yet.
No pity for the TSA.
They are every bit as treasonous as this guy.
Totally agree. Seems like this practice has become common place here at Tom's.
Shhh..... they can you now for questioning the powers that be.
Guys deserves a few years behind bars and a deep inquiry into his personal life to make sure there were not hidden motivations behind the attacks.
Not a fan of overreacting to terrorism, but when people break the law and fit the profile, I'd say you volunteered to have your life scrutinized.
I'm a firm believer in capitol punishment. The needs of the many out Weigh the needs of the few. I say a Humane death sentence or drop him off with terrorists so he can be with his homeboys.
Don't they screen stuff like this? I mean, seriously it's National Security, you'd think they'd have a backup database or a tape somewhere with the database on it. $5000 eh? Seems so small, did anything even happen? No... did someone say scapegoat?
Foolish fools

I think you need to read ALL of a article mainly this part "

This is what happens when you let someone know their position is going to end. In the real world, you lay someone off, pay them a severance, and escort them out of the building the same day. Letting an employee continue to work after letting them know their position is ending is just begging for actions like this.

Not really. Nobody knows what TSA stands for...Terrorism sounds more awe'ing...
...shouldn't it be anti-terrorism DB? or is the TSA storing terrorists' data?

agreed
I don't like American politics on terrorism.
It makes flying down south very difficult.
Next time I fly, I'm gonna grow a bigass beard, wear a turban, a bigass poofy jacket, and make every 10th word I say Allah. When they ask my reason for visiting, I'll say I'm the foreman for a demolitions project.
Then sue the living hell out of them from their response.
"it's cold in Canada, of course I don't shave often. Same reason for the jacket. You call it a turban, I call it a decorative toque. I'm also assisting on demolishing a group of old unsafe abandoned warehouse buildings so kids don't get hurt." =D

lol, have you seen chaser's war on everything. They had the same scenario where someone was recording around a nuclear facility, one was in an 'american' outfit and another in a 'terrorist' outfit...guess who got kicked out?..

How so? Where are your facts? It's so easy for people to criticize and not back up anything they say. I worked for the TSA for 2 years when they first took over. You wouldn't last 1 day doing their job. Here's some advice for you.. "Never judge a person until you've walked a mile in their shoes." But you probably don't do that, you just shoot your mouth off. Probably will get a message from a MOD and that's ok. Just tired of ignorant people on here.
No matter how you look at it or what you think, it is definitely not a good situation.
