Sony will present a 360-degree 3D display later this week.

Seems that holograms are getting further away from the bounds of fiction, and are getting closer to reality. Sony is the latest to test the holographic waters with a new prototype set to make a big reveal this Thursday at Tokyo's Digital Content Expo 2009. The big deal here is the device can create an object viewable at 360-degrees without a special set of glasses.

According to Impress (translated via Google) the device is 13 x 27 cm and creates a stereoscopic, 24-bit color image measuring 96 x 128 pixels... plenty big for sending messages to the troops or a lost Jedi.  The site didn't specify how the image would be generated, or how it would connect to a PC. However, it's believed that the device would be ideal for commercial use such as medical imaging or digital signage.

"[Sony plans] to continue with further research and development, and will consider a variety of application development, "a spokesperson for Sony told Empress. Applications could possibly include a 3D photo frame, an enhancement for television, a viewer to see callers on the telephones, and more.

Expect to hear more about Sony's 360-degree 3D display prototype later this week.

3D like that makes little sense to me. For the best picture I would want to be inside looking out, not outside looking in.

Wouldn't that be 96x128x96, now?

interesting. it looks tiny though, and im not sure how useful it will be. it would take tons of cameras for it to work with real people.

that is one small hologram image, but one big step for 3D halogram.

joshthor,
Movies might take awhile since you need a tons of cameras to record, but for games it would be an easy 3d projection.
