Miyamoto: Next Console Will Be Compact

The next Nintendo console will be more compact and cost-efficient.
Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, the Walt Disney of electronic gaming, still remains in the limelight after making an appearance last week in New York City. Recently the famed designer spoke with Popular Mechanics, talking about all things Nintendo including Mario, Zelda, and even the next console. Of course, nothing is set in stone, but with recent mentions about future hardware, it's not hard to figure out that a Wii 2 could be in the near future.
"What we've been able to do is introduce an interface that is both--I think--appealing and at the right price for a broad audience," he said, referring to the Wii Remote and the enhancing Motion Plus accessory. According to Miyamoto, interface will continue to be the primary driver of increased accessibility and lifestyle integration for gamers.
With that said, he also added that the interactive interface in video gaming will "bleed" into other elements of daily life, including home electronics. "For example, in Japan the Wii itself has a TV guide channel that Wii owners can download to their Wii. And for a lot of people in Japan who own a Wii, that TV guide channel is a lot more convenient and easier to use than a typical TV guide service."
But when asked about the future of Nintendo's hardware, he said the company wants to make it even more accessible than the current Wii. "What I can say is that, my guess is that because we found this interface to be so interesting, I think it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient."

So the Wii isn't cheap/compact enough?
"Compact" = another underpowered Nintendo Console. Since when has the size of a console stopped sales? If the design is right then any size will sell. And who has been complaining about the Wii being too big?
Wii 2? andyone for Super Wii? SWii!
Better be the size of an ipod shuffle, cause really, if I can't wear the system on my shirt, I'm just not intrested
any more support for consoles might spell disaster for the pc hardware manufactureres.. heres why:
By supporting consoles, Nvidia & ati might have gotten sales in the short term. However in the long term it has been a lack of sales for both of them.
Consoles sales even putting the xbox 360 and ps3 together do not exceed 60million. which imo is not much of an ammount for these 2 companies.
what has happened now is that the focus of developers has shifted to the consoles. which is why jumps in graphics have become stagnant now. the result in this is that even pc users dont need constant upgrades like the way they used to which means less sales from the pc market for nvidia and ati.
Also as a note previously a pc user would need to make a switch in about 2 years to stay uptodate with the latest games, now since its developed with consoles in minds the cycle has become 7 years. So previously if a pc user needed to upgrade once in 2 years its only going to be 1 in 7yrs now, there simply wont be games out to take advantage of hardware.
also the console market ati and nvidia thought to cater too is in the same situation. a console user will simply buy 1 console then make no hardware purchase for the rest of the generation unless the console fails.
imo going for console sales might have given a sale in the short term butfor the long term its been bad for all the pc hardware makers be it cpu, gpu, ram, chipsets etc. as time goes on this will get worse specially if another console gen is supported.
Tom's Hardware: you guys really suck at news lately. That quote has nothing to do with the next console, but the controller interface. Re-read the original quote and try again...and drop the sensationalist heading garbage.
@kashifme21 - yeap they make games for the lowest console and the PC suffers. the graphics are not up to scratch and the controls are made for consoles and a TV 5 feet away.
DRM keeps me away from PC games so I don't think I'll need to up date it again.

Agree on that.
They should give the new Wii DVR capabilities. That would give the console the edge they are looking for. Go for the home theatre aspect.
@kashifme21: I think I disagree. I have been out of the game world for a few years now, and am just beginning to get back into it, and it would seem that you are wrong about the hardware. In the gaming industry there have always been seemingly giant leaps and giant slumps in graphical quality of games. And with every generation of games there is a bigger and bigger leap between the minimum and maximum requirements for any particular game. The near ultimate example of this is Unreal tourniment. Every game has been highly scaleable, and even UT3 I have gotten to play on a 6 year old machine with a g6600 (it looked truely terrible, but it did run). At the same time I don't have any hardware that could max it out either. And look at crysis. To max that game out you still need more than one graphics card running in your system, and yet it will play well enough on a 'basic' game rig. The problem isnt the consoles, the problem is that we are on the brink of annother jump in graphics. The software people have maxed out the hardware, and now the hardware companies are adapting to new code. When the new technology hits the fan then the software people will push the hardware to the limit again, and the cycle continues. It is a 3-4 year cycle, and has been that way from the beginning.

How about you re-read what was said, you damned idiot.
The guy was specifically asked about the hardware. Do you understand what the word "hardware" means? Huh? Do you? How about you just go away for good.
So the Wii has roughly equivalent to gamecube graphics and I'm guessing the Wii 2 won't improve much at all... great...
More compact? Haha I love it.
The Wii is already like 1/4 the side of the PS3 slim (and 360), how much smaller can they go with their current disc media? Its not much bigger than an external DVD drive already.
They'd have to move to a GC sized disc, but that would make it incompatible with current Wii discs. I suppose they could make it a bit thinner.
Wow as if it was too big... I mean I could see if it was the size of the original Xbox but come on... The thing is thinner than 3 dvd cases.
Wii 2 needs better graphics. A controller that the accessories don't fly off and break your TV and that has the motion plus accessory built in.
Me personally, i would love to be able to turn on my lights from across the room with a wave of my hand, turn up the oven temp with a flick of my wrist, and never have to look for the remote again.
my wii looks like an anorexic midget compared to my original xbox sitting next to it. in fact i think the xbox was trying to eat the damn thing just last night. i had to fight it off using my wiimote and nunchuck.
Hey, maybe they'll come up with new interfaces. How about a Wii chair, so you can sit down and play the games with you butt cheeks comfortably? Or a Wii body suit (with special, um, "joystick" attachment) so you can feel total immersion? Or how about the Wii anime colored wig with huge eyes attachments. Then we can all go to a convention together ...
i would like it to be called wii squared or wii*wii so i can finally say "i'm going to go play with my wii wii"
Nintendo's next console will be as cheesy and as kiddy and 5 years behind in term of technology as usual.
I'll tell you what Nintendo needs to do.
Make a new console, that actually has, "next-gen" graphics, with decent online play, and no gimmicky remote control. Oh, and no childish games! I.e. "Cooking Mamma"...
Aren't they curious to see Link, Mario, and the rest of the crew in glorious 1080p, "NEXT-GEN" graphics?! I know I am!
captmorganarr- you're talking about Project Natal
http://www.youtube.com/xboxprojectnatal
Anyways My favorite is PC gaming, but I also was interested in the Wii. Only Major Problem with the Wii was the horrible Graphics...(reminded me of Nintendo 64 graphics)The Nintendo DS also had Horrible Graphics, I mean by today's standard and the standard when they were created around 2005, You would Expect much more Advance Graphic Cards within them. Finally the DS is getting Nvidia Tegra Graphics in their NEW DS, Finally.......But the Wii 2 or whatever it's called Needs Much Improve graphics. Nintendo will probably use the Graphics that the 360 currently has and size it down like what they did with the Wii to 32nm...what is expected of them being too cheap. I understand Keeping costs down but Nintendo lowered the Wii Price a long time when they could did it earlier to make it more attractive and demolish the xbox 360 and Ps3. But no they play it safe...

As usual? NES = Sega Master System, SNES = Genesis (both systems traded blows on different games and technical capability), N64 > PS1, Gamecube > PS2. All in terms of technical prowess. This is the only generation that Nintendo didn't have either equivalent or better hardware.. and guess what? They've sold more than both of the systems with more horsepower.
While I prefer to play on a PC, 360 or PS3, the Wii also has it's occasional fun game. However for you to say "as usual" is ridiculous and completely incorrect. All of their consoles up until the Wii were just as powerful, if not more powerful than their major competition's consoles.

I agree with you Eccentric909, on Nintendo and especially SEGA systems. In that time the technology was amazing when I was a Kid. But the Wii in general was not following the "Traditional Route of making a More powerful system", instead they went their own route to providing a New experience which attracted new users and a Fresh new Playing Field. If only Nintendo Wii Sported a Semi-powerful graphics card then I would still be playing it. My little brother bought the Wii and enjoyed the Mario games and SSB, but then he got bored especially of the graphics when Compared to his Friends Xbox 360. We bought he Xbox 360 after the Jasper Model was released and he Plays it non-stop, which me on the other hand was busy with College. I havn't been gaming since the 2004 with Halo 2, so when I got back into gaming only interesting Platform was the PC gaming which I re-entered since 2001. I thought of Finding "Free Alternatives FPS games" for the PC since I was saving up for College. I found Free to play games for the PC and Decided not to get into the Consoles anymore for the PC was the most cost-effective for me at this time. But I still hope the next Wii Surprises me with the Graphics and the Natal Project Hopefully Succeeds because Competitions is best for the winners are always the Consumers.

Did you just suggest that Shigeru Miyamoto go away for good?
What madness do you speak.
If you take into account that a 4850 cost about 80$ and is able to push every 360 and PS3 games easily, I don't have any difficulties to believe it.
From what it seems, Nintendo want to be able to launch their new console around 229$.

I think montezuma was referring to ex-reader about his comment.
Even the $40 HD 4650 has the same graphical horsepower as the PS3/X360 and within 2-3 years when the next Nintendo console is released it will likely have a low end HD 5000 or even HD 6000 series card which will easily handle everything the PS3/X360 can dream of.
However they may opt to modify the Broadway chip ensuring proper backwards compatibility, efficiency and architectural adhesion.
Thanks for pointing that out, Fleetwood.
"Since when has the size of a console stopped sales?"
since the original xbox tried to sell in Japan but was deemed too big and unattractive too japanese households. even the gamecube was a little too big but it still sold well
I have given up all hope on nintendo, they have repeatedly shown that they have abandoned their fanbase of nintendo fans. I wonder how far they can go with their current business strategy.

Actually when you compare the release list of core Nintendo games from the GC and core Nintendo games from the Wii you'll note that Nintendo has not abandoned that audience at all. The difference this generation is that Nintendo has included more casual oriented titles into the mix but the volume of core titles from Nintendo is no different than recent previous generations.
