HTC Intros Monstrous 4.7-inch Titan Powered by WP7.5

- By - Source : HTC

HTC has taken the wraps off its first Windows Phone 7.5 phones.

HTC has the Android platform to thank for its meteoric rise from plain, old OEM to smartphone superstar. However, the company was this week focused on a different OS entirely, choosing to announce a couple of new Windows Phone 7 handsets. Unveiled across Europe yesterday afternoon, the HTC Radar and HTC Titan both run the upcoming version of the Windows Phone 7, which is technically Windows Phone 7.5 (also known as Mango), and join the HD7, the Mozart, the Trophy, the Surround and the Pro in HTC's Windows Phone family.

First up is the monstrous Titan (pictured), which boasts a huge 4.7-inch display and a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU. It packs 512MB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, micro-USB, an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus, a 1.3-megapixel camera up front for video conferencing, Bluetooth and WiFi. The Radar, on the other hand, is significantly smaller with a 3.8-inch display, 1 1GHz CPU, 8GB of internal storage, a 5-megapixel camera in the back, a secondary VGA camera for video-conferencing, Bluetooth and WiFi.

"The new HTC Titan and Radar smartphones raise the bar with new advanced photography, multimedia and social capabilities that enable you to take full advantage of the latest Windows Phone innovations," HTC's Jason Mackenzie said in a statement. "With its large, cinematic display, the HTC Titan packs an amazing amount of power and innovation into a device that is unlike anything you’ve ever held before and the HTC Radar’s aluminum uni-body, compact size and finish will capture people’s attention."

Pricing and availability have yet to be announced, but HTC says both phones will be broadly available from October 2011 globally, beginning in Europe and Asia.

Yep, as stated above HTC had a meteoric rise off the back of Android.
Now it is going forward with a decent OS.
WP7 was good to start with, now it is great, lets see some reviews on this unit please.

Looks the same as my HD7, thats 4.3 inch and people are always like "That phones rediculously big" (I like it) not sure, but 4.7inch may be going a bit too far.

It's not mentioned in this article but I hope external storage is supported now. I was surprised at how quick my "16GB" (12GB, rest is reserved) filled up and I have no external storage support.

I had the old HTC Tytan II for few years (and Tytan for brief time), for that time they were great phones, in fact those units were much more stable than any droid I've tried so far, zero crashes or stability issues. Hopefully the new Titan will be just as reliable/stable as well.

It would seem the size differential between smartphones and tablets is continuing to narrow.

What's next, 5- to 6-inch "tablaphones?"

Opinions obviously differ regarding O/S....

HTC's meteoric rise with Android was no accident. Good hardware coupled with an open source O/S.

The best thing that happened to my HD2 was finding out that it can boot Android off the SD card.

Am I right in thinking that the Titan has a single core processor?

Yes. Samsung just introduced one, AFAIK.

I don't know how Android and WP handle multi-core. I know on the desktop, for most things single core = multi core. I can't tell the difference between my 6 core Thuban and 2 core Callisto. Not a big deal on the desktop but on the phone, everything I can't use shouldn't be there because of battery life.

Maybe I was too fast in being interested in this HTC Titan. First I should use it to see how it affects my eyes & also the battery power life span.

Makes me wonder how long would you use it between charge, 5 hours? Anybody remember when you won't have to charge your phone for at least two days or a week? I would be very much interested to this phone if it comes with solar charger and a lithium vanadium battery plus o-led display as a bonus, otherwise, its just another gadget that get push over in the next 6 months.

I know what you mean. I added memory to my Focus, but you have to reset it to get it to work (worth it though, 22GB available now (8 + 16))

That screen is huge. While I do appreciate the larger screen (as I can't use smaller ones) 4.7" might be too big to hold by one hand now.

Amongst other features, it could be used as a tea tray.

That Titan is sexy from every possible angle- I like it. By the way- it used to be the Evo 4G, what is now the best Android phone out there. There are so many that it's hard to see which is the best of the best.

How boring. Only thing HTC can compete is big ass screens and CPUs. The rest of the packet is garbage. Don't expect any support to your old HTC phones. They are making new models monthly like from an assembly line.

WhysoBluepandabear :
....Yeah, yeah....root your phone. I promise 90% of smart phone users do NOT root their phones. They're the people you have to be worried about. Stupid people who get pissed off at their phone being slow is a VERY bad thing for a company. People with a brain know that rooting their phone solves most, and almost all problems.

You forgot to mention that rooting also void your warranty and the possibility of getting support anywhere if it brakes from rooting. I wonder who's the stupid one?

The HD7 has a microSD slot hidden under the bottom back panel. I'm rocking 48Gb with my HD7.

Thats right, but a nice quick one that will most likely perform significantly faster than a dual core.
Creating applications and phone apps to fully utilize threading is still very difficult, even on the desktop where we've had multi-threaded CPUs for almost a decade.
Give me multi-cores on my desktop but a fast single core in my smartphone any day!

I see... I'm guessing you're one of those people.... You just prove me right. - though I might let this one slide; You are what you are.

Ii found you rather interesting; you called everyone who does not “root” his or her phone stupid, you called me stupid, then called delusional and ma a screw-up. It is a common knowledge not to insult anyone you do not know… Did you ever think that maybe some of those people you are calling stupid could be related to you? and maybe by slim chance is the one who pays your tuition/income? You might want to reassess yourself towards others. You use such foul words for nothing and it makes you look like a *****. You probably still in grade school and still have a lot to learn.

I would just tell those people 'It is not your phone so I don't care what you think'

Or do too many people these days care more about what others like than what they themselves like?

Ah, I remember when 4" phones were coming out - many here complained how oversized they were. Now I see tons of people using 4" screens all over campus, because it makes the web browsing, emailing, and facebooking all the more enjoyable when you have more desktop space to read more than 2 lines of text.

Another common complaint is why anyone would want to watch netflix on a tiny phone or on the go - these people must be kids who never had the joy of waiting in a Department of Motor Vehicles queue for two hours to renew their license. (When you have an eye test you can't do it online...) They give us larger screens, and then people say what would you use it for - how about watching netflix while waiting in a queue? Or maybe being able to see more than one field at a time when typing an email? Or perhaps seeing a text 4 or 5 back that you are responding to?

Personally, I miss my physical slide-out keyboard. When I am doing a crossword, I like to see the whole puzzle while typing a word. When emailing, it is nice to not loose 2/3 of the screen to a virtual keyboard. Like any computer, its about how much legible text you can get on the screen when typing long messages. I do a lot on the go, so pulling out a laptop and hotspotting it can be a bit too inconvenient, thus I prefer to do it on my phone.

In summary, a lot of people complain about how pointless the device is. However, the success of 4" devices along with tablets show there is a market for these larger screens. Now if only we could get the manufacturers to make inexpensive long battery life basic phones instead of just uber-powered smartphones....

Yes... but with anything mobile, you have to take into consideration the efficiency of the OS and battery life. WP7 is a really efficient hardware accelerated OS that runs very smoothly on a single core, often better than Android on a multi-core. Putting in a multi-core processor for a WP7 phone won't give you any more speed (since there already is no lag) and will drain your battery much faster. So really, there's no point in putting in a multi-core processor.
