Virgin Mobile Reveals $40 Unlimited Data Plan
Despite AT&T capping bandwidth, Virgin Mobile has introduced a prepaid unlimited data plan.
Looking for a mobile broadband connection without the annoying contract? Sprint Nextel Corp.'s Virgin Mobile USA just announced a prepaid data plan that offers "unlimited" use for $40 USD a month. Don't want to pay the hefty fee? The company also offers a $10, prepaid plan that provides 100MB of mobile broadband access for ten days. Both plans replace the previous tiered $20, $40, and $60 Broadband2Go offerings.
"Many unlimited broadband offerings require a contract or are on networks with limited range, so they don’t meet the need for flexibility or true mobility," said Neil Lindsay, chief marketing officer, Virgin Mobile USA. "The introduction of Virgin Mobile’s prepaid unlimited broadband for $40 a month will provide the access you need on a nationwide network without a contract."
The company said that the new plans are compatible with two devices currently on sale at Best Buy, RadioShack, Sprint stores and more: the Ovation MC760 USB device that connects to a single computer or laptop ($79.99), and the MiFi 2200, a $149.99 portable hotspot device that allows up to five users to access the Internet one time.
The new $10 and $40 plans will begin Wednesday. Customers who are currently signed up for the previous $20, $40 and $60 plans will be able to use up the data (or time, whichever) first. The next time they need Broadband2Go, they will have the choice of the two two plans.

Considering I currently get unlimited Data/Email with Verizon on my Blackberry @ $29/month the $40 mark is sort of ridiculous.
However, considering AT&T already dumped unlimited, and everything points toward Verizon doing the same, $40 might end up being the new "good deal".
Quite pathetic if you ask me, that our data costs seem to go up rather than down.
Its supposed to be a Data to go thing for your PC / Wireless device dude.

Which you can use your phone for. Tethering is a wonderful thing.
Virgin here (Canada) is still $85/month for 5GB.
Man. This would be incredibly awesome if it was in Canada.
I can see a lot of new customers for Virgin mobile.
Finally someone that does not think with their chocolate star.

I totally agree with everything in your post, except for the first part. I mean, sure $29 is cheap, but you're getting internet on a Blackberry. The usefulness of data on that is significantly less than that of a modern smartphone, like an Android or WinMo 7 phone.
It's too bad that tethering was disabled on my Droid's 2.2 update. I guess I might have to think about Virgin's options. That no contract/no plan is pimp.
How the heck are you getting unlimited email/data for $29? A basic phone plan is about 30, add to that the data plan, another 30 - total is $60.
Quite a deal. I like it.
