Is 'Pluribus' season 2 happening? What we know so far

In the few short weeks since it premiered on November 7, "Pluribus" has not only swiftly become one of the best Apple TV Plus shows to watch now but one of the best TV shows of the year, full-stop. And after that early Christmas surprise of the season one finale getting released two days early thanks to the holiday, fans are already wondering if and when a second season of the post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama will hit the streaming service.

In case you missed it, "Pluribus" is the latest series from "Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan, who reunites with his "Better Call Saul" star Rhea Seehorn for the mind-boggling new series. Seehorn plays Carol Sturka, an unhappy author found immune after an alien virus transforms the rest of humanity into a blissfully content hive mind, leaving her to uncover what's really going on and save humanity in the process.

Will there be a 'Pluribus' season 2?

Good news: Yes, a second season of "Pluribus" is already in the works. Apple TV actually gave the high-concept drama a two-season order upon acquisition before an episode had even premiered.

That was clearly a smart move, as "Pluribus" is already an awards contender, earning two Golden Globe and two Critics Choice nominations thus far, both for Best Drama Series and for Seehorn's lead performance.

"We're lucky that we have a series 2 already in the offing,” Gilligan told Radio Times ahead of the season 1 finale. “We're going to open the writers' room for that next week… And I'm excited about that. A little nervous too. I don't have all the answers. My writers and I, we don't have all the answers."

"But then we never have, we never had them for 'Breaking Bad,' for 'Better Call Saul,' and that's probably the better way to go," Gilligan continued. "I have some ideas. We have some ideas about how the show should wind up, but I think it's, it always behooves us to be ready to jettison a good idea for a better idea, so we're ready and willing to do that."

When will 'Pluribus' season 2 come out?

Less good news: It will be a bit of a wait before "Pluribus" season 2 drops. According to Radio Times, filming likely won't begin on the new season until spring 2026, and due to the complex nature of the production (each ep reportedly costs upward of $15 million to make), seaosn 2 could take as long as a year to complete before they're screen-ready. That means it is unlikely that the Vince Gilligan-created series would return earlier than late 2027 or early 2028.

A season 2 plot synopsis has obviously not been released yet, but it's safe to say that the second season will delve even deeper into the origins of the mass "Joining" and Carol's continued struggle against the Others' hive mind. We'll also likely see her newfound allyship with Manousos Oviedo (Carlos-Manuel Vesga) further explored.

How many seasons of 'Pluribus' will there be?

It's too early to tell, but Gilligan has confidently proclaimed that he would make as many seasons of "Pluribus" as star Rhea Seehorn wants. “I'm really doing it, as much as anybody; I'm doing it for her,” he told Variety. “She deserves to be the megastar that she is … I want her to be as happy with this show as she could possibly be. And yeah, I don't know. At this point, maybe four seasons, I'm guessing, but who the hell knows?”

However, the series creator has already thought out how he wants "Pluribus" to finish: "I think we have a pretty good idea of where it should end," he told the outlet. “One of the most important things I can do in the writers' room is not be too precious about the ideas … If we come up with a better way to end this thing, we will."
