NordVPN has made significant improvements to its global server network, with 211 locations now available to every subscriber.
This is more than any other VPN on our best VPN list, and sees NordVPN leapfrog ExpressVPN and its figure of 189 – now the second-largest.
More locations tend to suit users in larger countries, or countries where servers get full up quickly. Arguably, the number of countries offered is more important – NordVPN has 135 – but this location upgrade is still very notable.

23 new locations since the start of March
NordVPN's total locations jumped from 188 on March 5 to 211 on April 8, an increase of 23.
Since our last review in October 2025, 46 new locations have been added, including more than 30 US cities. The new US cities means NordVPN joins ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access in having a server location in every US state – making it one of the best US VPNs.
Server locations have been established in eight new countries. These are:
- Barbados – Bridgetown
- Chad – N'Djamena
- Cote D'Ivoire – Yamoussoukro
- Fiji – Suva
- Mauritius – Port Louis
- Suriname – Paramaribo
- Tajikistan – Dushanbe
- Togo – Lome
Alongside the 30+ new locations in the US, France has received a new location in Bordeaux, and the UAE has received a new location in Fujairah. These are both physically located in their respective countries.
135 countries worldwide
NordVPN covers 135 countries worldwide. This is 27 more than ExpressVPN, which has 189 locations in 108 countries worldwide.
Although NordVPN has more locations than Proton VPN (211 vs 196), the Swiss-based VPN trumps NordVPN when it comes to the number of countries. Proton VPN covers 145 countries, 10 more than NordVPN's 135.
Proton VPN typically focuses on underrepresented countries, and it offers the highest number of locations in Africa and Asia out of all the major VPNs.
However NordVPN does boast unique server locations in countries not covered by its biggest competitors. These are:
- Barbados – Bridgetown
- Belize – Belmopan
- Fiji – Suva
- Suriname – Paramaribo
NordVPN has 8,000+ servers worldwide, but doesn't share the specific number. VPNs have historically put these total server numbers front and centre in their advertising and on their websites. But we're beginning to see less of a focus on this, and more attention on the number of individual countries and locations.
Total servers vary wildly between the biggest VPNs. Proton VPN has 19,700+, NordVPN has 8,000+, while Surfshark and ExpressVPN only have 4,000+ and 3,000+ respectively.
What this shows is that quality can be more important than quantity, and the locations and countries served should be the figure to look at.
However, having more servers isn't a bad thing as it can reduce congestion, while closer and/or more available servers means faster speeds and reduced latency – resulting in improved performance.
But when choosing your VPN, you're better off determining which cover your desired locations rather than choosing the one with the highest server count.
