For people who love working with their hands, the year tends to follow a familiar rhythm: tune up the heater before winter, tackle deep-cleaning projects in the spring and spend summer weekends knocking out DIY projects around the house.

I'll admit, I'm not naturally one of those people. But I've always liked the idea of building something that improves my living space, especially when it adds a bit of style or solves a storage problem.

Over the years, I've used ChatGPT for everything from boosting productivity and planning summer activities to creating better routines and staying organized. So when it came time to tackle a DIY home project, I wondered whether the chatbot could help there, too.

As it turns out, it could. While ChatGPT won't replace experience, the right tools or a skilled contractor, it did provide surprisingly useful guidance throughout the process. Along the way, I discovered several smart ways to use AI as a DIY assistant — whether you're building, organizing, planning or troubleshooting your next project.

Starting the process toward building a floating bookshelf

So yeah, I love books.

Anyone who walks into my apartment can immediately tell. My shelves are packed with video game art books, wrestler autobiographies, graphic novels and just about every other type of book that's caught my attention over the years.

With plenty of empty wall space left, I'd been kicking around the idea of installing a floating bookshelf or two. What started as a passing thought quickly turned into a real project when I decided to see whether ChatGPT could help me bring it to life.

I gave the chatbot a simple prompt: "I want to build a floating bookshelf wall in a small apartment living room for under $250. I've never used power tools before. Give me a beginner-friendly shopping list and weekend timeline."

Within seconds, ChatGPT produced a detailed project plan that was surprisingly easy to follow. Instead of overwhelming me with technical jargon, it broke the project into manageable steps and outlined the key goals I should focus on before getting started:

  • 3–5 floating shelves
  • About 5–6 feet wide total
  • Enough depth for books, plants, framed art, candles, game controllers, etc.
  • Minimal cutting
  • Beginner-safe tools only

ChatGPT didn't just give me a shopping list. It generated images of finished floating bookshelf designs, put together a beginner-friendly list of tools and materials that fit my budget and even outlined a safe setup for locating wall studs before drilling.

What impressed me most was how practical the advice felt. The chatbot included a weekend project timeline, recommended shelf-depth measurements based on the types of books I wanted to display and even suggested upgrade paths for future DIY projects once I felt more comfortable using power tools.

As someone with limited DIY experience, having all of that information organized in one place made the project feel far less intimidating and much more achievable.

Alongside turning my vague DIY project concept into something tangible that has an achievable end goal, here are a bunch of other ways ChatGPT can step up to assist you in your assorted DIY projects and an example prompt for each:

  • You can use it as a tool explainer: List and explain the essential tools required for beginner woodworking like I’m buying my first toolkit.
  • You can ask for exact measurements and material estimates: How many boxes of laminate flooring do I need for a 12x14 room with a closet?
  • You can troubleshoot problems as they occur: My paint is streaky after the second coat. What did I do wrong?
  • You can make a request to generate custom designs for custom spaces: Design a compact coffee station for a 4-foot-wide kitchen corner with hidden storage and a modern aesthetic.
  • You can tell it to develop an affordable shopping list for your project: I want to redo my bathroom vanity for under [cash amount]. Tell me which areas of that project I should spend more money on and which areas I can go on a budget for.
  • You can turn into your personal “confidence translator”: Be brutally realistic. Can a beginner install peel-and-stick backsplash tile in one afternoon?

The takeaway

Sweating it out while trying to remodel your bathroom, rejuvenating your bedroom walls with a fresh coat of paint or building something small that you’ve always wanted to add to your home decor are among the long list of DIY home projects anyone can jump into.

And with all the clever ways you can use ChatGPT to assist you, you should have less of a headache while attempting any of the DIY projects you’ve been hoping to complete.
