This 30-minute ChatGPT routine transformed my mornings — here’s the exact prompt I used

The day-to-day life of a journalist is full of busywork.

Pitching, writing, editing and participating in meetings are just a handful of the duties I have to tend to as a member of a huge editorial team. And I will admit to having moments where I lose focus and grow frustrated with myself for being hampered by the dreaded “Writer’s Block." Waking up in the morning and setting myself on a path toward completing my writing tasks, making sound decisions and successful multitasking is hard to do daily.

ChatGPT set up a 30-minute productivity routine that split each goal into defined time blocks

Once I gave ChatGPT the okay to develop a productivity routine built around my profession as a writer, it got right to work. The AI’s quick turnaround resulted in the following regimen, which is separated into minute blocks, a central goal to complete, and the tasks I need to tackle in order to reach that goal:

  • Minutes 0-3: Clear the Noise - the main goal is to reduce friction before you start working. Silence all your notifications, close any unrelated tabs, place your phone out of reach, and open only what you need for one task
  • Minutes 3-8: Define the One Win - the main goal is to choose one meaningful outcome by asking yourself, “What’s the single task that would make this session a success?” and “What moves a real project forward (not just maintenance)?” A simple target could mean drafting 400 words for an intro, outlining five headline options, or updating a headline/article to increase its visibility”
  • Minutes 8-25: 17-Minute Deep Focus Sprint - the main goal is to make tangible progress by setting a timer for 17 minutes, working on your only defined task, not editing midway through unless completely necessary, and writing a rough version of my task if I get stuck so I continue working. Should a distraction arise, write it down and immediately return to your task
  • Minutes 25-28: Tighten and Improve - the main goal is to upgrade what you just created by cleaning up obvious errors, strengthening weak sentences, refining its structure, and clarifying any messy thinking that may be present
  • Minutes 28-30: Set Up the Next Session - the main goal is reducing tomorrow’s friction by jotting down the next task at hand, any questions you may have about it, and reflecting on what worked during the session you just completed

After putting this productivity routine into practice for a full workweek, I took notice of how it helped me in four key areas. It eliminated my constant battle with elimination decision fatigue, which tended to get in the way of helping me find the one task I needed to zero in on since I used to mentally juggle so many of them.

It also pushed me to focus on one meaningful task at a time and made me feel accomplished once it was done. And by building momentum instead of chasing perfection in my work, I had a much easier time getting our first drafts that eventually transformed into finished pieces.

Here’s why this routine works not just for journalists, but for professionals as a whole

Building a productivity routine that fits your professional or school schedule fits perfectly. It could apply to students who want to renew their focus when they’re home studying, content creators, athletes, etc., who want to build a customized version of that protocol to fit their needs.

ChatGPT even goes one step further to fine-tune its productivity routine by adding more time to it and turning it into a printable checklist that you can take with you to work or the gym.

It’s also ready to create a so-called “low-energy” version of your routine whenever your motivation levels are low, but you still want to will yourself into moving your goals forward.

The takeaway

I opted not to watch a flood of motivational videos and buy a bunch of books meant to elevate my work efficiency—simply asking ChatGPT to produce a 30-minute productivity routine specifically built around my daily writing duties worked like a charm.

For anyone out there who always senses a dark cloud of laziness hanging above their heads and feels unmotivated, work with ChatGPT to help you abandon those mental roadblocks and become more efficient every day.
