Nintendo Sees Red for 25th Anniversary Consoles

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Red consoles should be the standard color.

It's the 25th anniversary of Nintendo's entry into the North American market (see the story about the NES turning 25 here), and the video game company wants you to see red.

Launching next month are red-colored versions of the Wii and DSi XL, and we'd have to say that they look pretty spiffy.

The Red Wii Bundle celebrates the 25th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. game. The bundle includes New Super Mario Bros. Wii and a new red Wii Remote Plus controller, in addition to all the other included items, like Wii Sports and a red Nunchuk controller. It will be available while supplies last at a suggested retail price of $199.99.

For portable gamers looking for the biggest DS they can get, there will be a Red Nintendo DSi XL Bundle that's branded with iconic Super Mario Bros.-themed graphics. The bundle comes with Mario Kart DS and will be available while supplies last at a suggested retail price of $179.99.

Nintendo also announced that the new Wii Remote Plus with built in MotionPlus will be available from now on in all Wii hardware packages and bundles, as well as sold separately at a suggested retail price of $39.99. Nintendo will also have a bundle for the new Wiimote as well, packing in FlingSmash for $10 more to a price of $49.99.

Not really feeling the red. I'd prefer a color which matched my home decor.

Works if your home is on fire though.

Trying to make a bigger push into the Chinese and North Korean markets? Does anybody remember the Mario is a communist internet meme?

The real thing that piques my interest is that, unless I'm mistaken, those MSRPS match those of the NORMAL bundles... Which are short a game each. So if one wanted both the console and the selected pack-in game, then that's a $50 savings on the Wii.

Meanwhile, the Wii's approaching its own anniversary... The 4th. So we're there, and now we've got 3 of the five colors Nintendo promised. Guess it'll be another few years before we see the green and blue Wiis.

Oh, so it's kind of like The People's Cube? :P

you'd think that after the 500 Billion dollars Nintendo made,
they could have said, thanks world, here is a new Mario game.

Still, thanks for the Memories, Nintendo. :)

I really wish they'd make more limited edition versions of consoles...

My wallet doesn't though.

the 25th Anniversary Nintendo should play all of the old games or at least accept the old cartrages, then I would buy it.

The Rush song "Red Lenses" just started playing in my head when I read this article.

Edit @ OP's request.

I wish they would release a "new super mario bro's" based on the third one, the first one is classic and all but not as good as super mario bro's 3.

Ok... so the point of this article is that Nintendo made a Wii that's the same as all the other Wii's except that...it's red.

Somehow I feel less intelligent now.

The anniversary Wii should have included all of the virtual console copies of the Mario games. THEN I would think about buying it.

Mario lost all of its appeal for me once it entered the 3d realm, even though Super Mario 64 was still a pretty good game. Nothing like a classic mario side-scroller.

I believe the Red color is a shout out to its original console..the FamCom. Kinda cool but not going to rush out and buy another Wii...heh.

True, a lot of clear consoles have been made... But that'd be kind of hard for the Wii, given its tiny size necessitates the main outter casing be made of metal rather than plastic.

Well, that's not ENTIRELY fair, since the bar they set for 3 they've pretty much failed to ever pass. I will never forget the angry sun. Or giant world. Or sky world... Etc. Seriously, were they on drugs when they came up with the worlds? They were just too creative.

had this included the Super Mario All Stars "re-re-release" that Japan got... I might have purchased. Instead we get the same retail games as we've always had. Oh well.

Here's a clear case for the DIY'er.

Well, you know why they could never make a transparent gamecube, right? 'Cause everyone would see that it just runs on hopes and dreams.

Since when are Game Cube jokes relevant anymore? Or, for that matter, Game Cubes?

Though as for the inner workings... They were perhaps the most pain to program, as if you went lazy in your programming, you couldn't extract as much power as you could from a PS2, let alone an Xbox. But if you painstakingly managed the resources, (especially texture memory) you could get the Game Cube to duke it out with the Xbox on LARGELY equal terms, getting around 2+ times the graphical memory bandwidth- Though memory SUPPLY was still an issue.

The same still holds true for the Wii; yes, you CAN get (non-HD) graphics to compare to the PS3 and 360, but it requires a level of effort only seen exerted for The Conduit and Monster Hunter 3. And of course, the RAM supply makes for very frequent load screens.

Color me (er, transparify me?) impressed. That does look snazzy. Though I will still note, as I can see by comparing pics, that the clear plastic casing is slightly bulkier than the normal metal one. Still cool-looking.

Now all we need is a gold-plated Wii. Oh wait, someone already did that.

If it were transparent it would be a nice comeback to the N64 transparent case back then. Remember those?
