These cheap DVD players could pose a fire risk.
If you've purchased a cheap DVD player from Wal-Mart in the last three years and it looks like the one you see in the image above, you should stop using it immediately.
Wal-Mart is now recalling the Durabrand DVD player as it can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers. So far Wal-Mart has received 12 reports of the DVD players overheating, five of which have resulted in fires that caused property damage. Thankfully, none of the fires resulted in any injury.
The player was sold for around $29 nationwide from January 2006 through July 2009.
If you have one of these players, the odds are still on your side as about 1.5 million of them are in the wild, with only a dozen having been reported as dangerous. Nevertheless, those who own this player may take it back to Wal-Mart for a full refund.

Or, Stop being cheap and pay an extra 10$ for a Sony DVD player with more features that's also sold in Wal-Mart and you wouldn't have to worry about a fire.

...because Sony stuff never ever catches on fire or explodes.
You pay for what you get. Apple is the exception to the rule though. With them you pay extra to get this feature.
I LOL'd knickle. Good one.

Maybe their notebook batteries. But I haven't heard of a stationary Sony DVD player powered by a Sony Lithium battery, nor read about 1.5 million or any of their DVD players catching fire as the one in the article. But I see where you're going.
^^ WIN
I haven't heard of any DVD player catching on fire. So technically you could go with any other brand and be OK, even if it's as cheap as the Durabrand. Aye?
lol good one
Sony stuff never explodes....LOL! They weren't even good at putting out the metaphorical 'fire' they had as a result of all those battery issues. Certainly did not make me want to buy sony. This can be a risk with any brand large or small. Bottom line is that (generally) you get what you pay for.
It's good to know, I have one of these and its sitting between two propane tanks...
That is what you get with cheaply designed compact stuff...

I bet the player catches fire but the fuse stays intact
Wait a minute. Are they saying that a DVD player that costs $29 is cheaply made?
It's not just the players from Wal-Mart that suck. At lunch today, my friend opened a brand new DVD (Boondock Saints) that he bought from Wal-Mart and tried to play it and it wouldn't play because it was too scratched up.
just a thought i think ASDA in the UK (a wal-mart subsiduary) may have had these - i dont know if the uk spec ones have the same problem though....
The Electronic Revolution is going to burn us all to extinction.
And salmonella poisoning from tomatoes (err, peppers) will be the death of anyone not using products from the Electronic Revolution
Looks like more incendiary electronic devices. Walmart's doing a recall whereas Apple just wanted to pay people not to talk about the problem (exploding iPods)?
If Walmart had a user account here, I'd +1 them.
So we have 5 in 1,500,000 over a course of three years that caught fire and a total of 12 that overheated? Don't buy this DVD player it has a 0.0000008% chance of overheating and a 0.0000003% of catching fire.
Pardon me if I'm not worried.

The Fuse is extra

Exactly. Safe to use. They have a better safety rating than most medical devices.
I bought that player exactly 3 years ago and never even caught fire or heated up. Why? because I have a life and only let it run 2 hours a day, 4 hours tops. No actually, I lied. I have a $60 sony dvd player and it's been running awesomely for 4 years... and a $30 forgot-brand-name dvd player that I tossed away in a year because it was sucking so badly.
well, we can burn dvd's on it

Seriously, them are good stats for $29
Im gunna go snag one on my way home.
Cheap brand

I am willing to bet the chance of dying in an automobile accident while driving to Walmart and back is greater than the chance of this thing catching fire.

Yea, and it is even riskier on black friday
Gives a whole new meaning to the term "DVD burner". I would never buy this kind of crap player. My Pioneer Elite DV-37 was alot more money but i bought it more than a decade ago and has never failed to play a disc, has had more than a 1000 hours of use. Did this player even have a UL tag on the cord or on back of unit?
"Durabrand" LOL
just give people a fire extinguster when they get one of these dvd player as a add-on.
Durabrand Board meeting: "Jim, should we invest our profits in improving quality control measures, or give our CEO a bonus?" "Let's give him the bonus. Matter of fact, I'll give it to him. Who has change for a $20?"
