Star Wars to Arrive on Blu-ray on September 27

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Buy it again with six times the pixels.

Every serious movie collector must have Star Wars on multiple formats. After all, that is the genius of Lucas in getting us to buy it again and again, even if the last time was really "the last time."

If you're a fan of 1080p, be prepared to buy it at least one more time, as we learned at CES thanks to a Darth Vader-like individual that Star Wars will be headed to Blu-ray in September.

Thanks to an early listing for pre-orders on Amazon, we may even have a specific of September 27.

Just because it was fun, here's that CES announcement video once again.

Buying the same movie over and over each time a new format comes out is stupidity incarnate.

Eh, I liked star wars a long time back, maybe if I was 10 years younger I'd buy another copy in a new format. But not anymore.

Lucas has long gutted the old story, re-writing and re-interpreting things.

I tend to agree with Red Letter Media on their view of him and his business. If you haven't seen the reviews, definitely, go see them. Its hilarious.

The more incarnations I see of Darth Vader, the less interested in Star Wars I am. The 70s versions of Darth Vader were cool and evil, like he was suppose to be. In Star Wars 3 when Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader, I just cannot take Darth Vader seriously. Blame CGI, blame the ideology of trying to look more 'kid friendly'. This lame video of Darth Vader (posted above) makes me want to stick a light saber straight into my head. Then again, I was already turned off by Episode I. Blame Jar Jar Binks. There did THAT thing come from, Disney?

I once saw the HD versions on dish, it was 1080i and in 5 channel audio (not 5.1, but 4.1) it was a lot better, but just liking watching other older movies, the transfer to digital doesn't really make a huge impact .

I have all 3 on betamax. The boxes look a little tired, but I'm assuming they work....

I'm only interested if the bluray release includes the original versions of the movies.

all those saying "sif buy the films again, the VHS ones are fine!" you clearly miss the point of bluray, and I honestly don't know why you cared enough to click on the article...

its not like people don't know what they are getting. they are getting starwars, but better quality.

I too have seen some 1080i hdtv rips of starwars, and can vouch for it being noticeably more awesome quality wise.

it could not be more clearly advertised. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY IT!

so STFU.

What a terrible line of stormtroopers! They're supposed to have walked to the beat of the music, with the same foot forward, and they are all supposed to stop and turn at the same time....

You don't need the Bluray version if you don't have a big screen. Once you get into the 50" panels or hd projectors then it's a different story. I have a 37" and 42" hd panel and my progessive DVD player works pretty good. Bluray from my PS3 on the 37 and 42 looks better but not a big difference. But on my 50" panasonic viera and my projection set to 110", bluray is a must.

Almost as bad as Jim Cameron milking the shi* out of Avatar on Blu with its 80 versions and 5 minutes of footage added with each one lol. On a side note Blu Ray is all I watch whether its a torrent version or the disc itself so this is better late than never...

Whatever they say, I'd still like to have a 1080 Copy of the whole series......just to add to my collection and watch it again.....
Some movies will never die

Since all my panels are only 60hz and my blue ray players due such a good job of upscaling the blue ray movies never look that much better than my dvds or even my dvd rips.

I already own all 6 on dvd, no need to upgrade.

Well unless (like another poster already mentioned) they are being released in their original untouched versions.

I already own the complete set so I will just download the higher quality version. They have been paid for their movies already; I will not pay again.

Lucas would have you pay for the DVD, pay for the Blu-Ray, play for the mobile phone version, and then pay for a version you can watch on your computer without a disc. No thanks Lucas. I paid once and I'll enjoy all versions of the movie.

Pre-orders? No thanks... At 5:25, all I heard was "give us your money, interest free, and in 9 months we will send you this".

BS. You must have poor eyesight, because the difference is obvious.Next you'll be telling us your computer LCD only needs to be 1024x768 because you can't tell the difference between that and 1920x1080.

You must be one of those amatuers that view a screen standing 2 feet from the screen. Take an objective view from a typical viewing distance 6 ft, 8ft, 12 ft... I'm an early adopter of Bluray but I'm not blind to the hype. Now I await 4K.

I would probably buy the bluray version, only if it's the original translation w/o the later added cg effects.

hah im going to buy this just so i can have it on every (popular) format. vhs, special edition vhs, dvd, original theatrical edition dvd, and now blu-ray. i guess i just need the laser-disc edition?

each version adds something, whether it is additional footage, deleted scenes, higher resolution, or in the case of blu-ray, all three.

my favorite version is still the original theatrical release with the goofy chimpanzee palpatine :)

I got all original episodes in HD already off cable recorded to D-VHS. Definetly better than DVD but not as clean as newer movies mastered in HD. I'm sure blu ray would be slightly cleaner but not enough to make me purchase. I may would buy in 3d BR if that was ever released.
