Sharp LCD HDTV's Banned From U.S. Sale

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Aquos could be in hot water.

Bloomberg news reported that some Sharp Aquos LCD HDTVs are now banned from the U.S. because they infringe upon a patent held by Samsung.

Samsung and Sharp have been fighting in the U.S. and Japan over patents related to technologies dealing with HDTVs utilizing LCD technology. Interestingly enough, a trade judge said earlier this month that Samsung televisions infringe upon Sharp’s patents, and recommended that Samsung’s HDTVs be banned from the U.S.

The International Trade Commission posted on its website an exclusion order suggesting that unlicensed technologies inside Sharp televisions will no longer be valid for sale in the U.S.

Neither Sharp nor Samsung have commented yet on the ITC’s rulings, but expect some sort of action soon as neither company wants to be locked out of the U.S. market.

OH NO!!! Does this mean that Samsung will jack the prices up for a little while, you know, since they are so inexpensive now...

Patent system = Win,

we get to pay more and have less options for products working as they should, I feel better already.

Good thing that I bought samsung 32 inch last year. :) Loving every second of it.
Screw patent system, making the business worse.

It'd be nice if they mentioned the nature of the patents being contested. The Bloomberg story only mentions that "The patent [...] was issued in 2004 and is titled Liquid Crystal Display having wide viewing angle."

Seems rather generic. I wish they'd explain what it is that Sharp is alleged to have stolen.

I own a 26" Sharp HDTV LCD, and I have no issues over it. If Sharp is using the same technology as Samsung then maybe I have a little of Samsung quality in my Sharp HDTV :P

Quote :Sharp LCD HDTV's Banned From U.S. Sale

I was expecting that Sharp was infringing on Smamsung's patents, but then I read this line:

Quote :...a trade judge said earlier this month that Samsung televisions infringe upon Sharp’s patents, and recommended that Samsung’s HDTVs be banned from the U.S.

So, Samsung is infringing on Sharp's patent but Sharp is getting the ban?

It could be that one of Samsung tv infringe and that one is being banned, and one of Sharp is infringing so that one is being banned. So maybe now Samsung and Sharp will allow their use to tech to each other and get said tv unban.

I researched a lot when I was buying my first LCD TV and from an industry report, for the first two years LCD/Plasma was widely available and affordable, SHARP controls 90% of the market because it is the first on the market.

why is everyone still giving a damn about LCD when OLED is coming soon?

Patents are intentionally filed to be as vague and seemingly inclusive as possible, and somehow they are accepted in such a form. Patent law is probably more screwed up and backwards than Copyright law, it just gets less attention because its harder for millions of people to produce high tech gadgets in their homes than download stuff.

OK for everyone who is so confused it says this: A judge recommended that Samsung's TV's be banned, but it hasn't happened because it was the opinion of a judge, not a ruling. Now the ITC HAS banned certain models of Sharp's TV lineup. Why does everyone always assume THG has it wrong?

At least my samsung-designed products are inside my well made-by-sharp TV,,,i swear i know 10 ppl that bought a samsung tv, be it a CRT, DLP, LCD & Plasma across all of its products lines & guess what? ALL of them have cheesed out on the picture quality just after the factory warranty runs out,,,this is my second sharp, 1st one was a tube that lasted 10+ years,, would have lasted longer if i didnt drop it

Quote :LCD came out of Sarnoff Labs in princeton NJ and was later part of RCA. RCA couldn't figure out how to make anything out of it so they sold it to Sharp Electronics who has put 30+ years into LCD research and production. First use was in calculators to replace more expensive and power hungry LED's
Sharp didnt invent the LCD they just bought the technology.

There is slightly more info here

Apparently it has to do with the "Vertical Alignment" aspect of the LCD tech.

Really? 10 people? Come on if you want to give your opinion just do it, but don't give us that BS that all 10 people you apparently know had bad samsung panels under their belts... Probably it was one, and it was just a fluke. Yes, it happens, even with high-quality samsung panels. Stay away from off-brands (insignia, etc) and you'll be happy. Pft, 10 people.... I swear I know 10 people who got cheese poisoning last tuesday!

there are only four mfg's of the actual lcd panel in the world, samsung being one of them, There may have been a MASSIVE lack of screens in the US if they had banned samsung. :-p

This whole licensing and proprietary crap is a monopoly in disguise. Disband the whole department or SEVERLY constrict what can be licensed/copyrighted/proprietary

I have a complete no name brand 42" LCD that is fine by me because I paid $499 for it. Sure beats spending twice that.
