Small and whitebox PC vendors are forced to seek new ways to make money in the low-margin, pricing-intensive PC sector. That said, notebooks represent one domain in which small- and mid-sized computer dealers can still make money.
Indeed, analyst numbers quantify the opportunities at hand. With growth of 14.1 percent last quarter over the same period last year, sales have achieved their second successive double-digit increase. The strong demand for notebooks proved to be the segment's driver. Altogether, the global demand for PCs rose to 42.5 million units.
Local suppliers in the U.S.have thus far benefited the most from the upsurge in demand. They posted growth of 19.1 percent over the same period the previous year, corresponding to 15.7 million units in total. The winners this quarter were HP (+33.9%) and Dell (+24.9%). Gateway's unit sales declined by 28.6 percent, however (interim figures provided by Gartner).
