3. The Traditional Part Of The Review

OK, so we know I'm going to have to approach the barebones MSI MS-1029 and 64 bit computing somewhat differently than the standard laptops and notebooks we review on MobilityGuru. Still there's no reason not to look at the MS-1029 as a notebook computer from a features and usability perspective. Before that, let's put the MSI notebook in the proper category.

Classifying The MSI MS-1029

I've been calling the MS-1029 a "notebook" computer since the beginning of this article. Here's why. As the table below shows, we classify portable computers with great care. Unlike many manufacturers and product reviewers we don't call everything a "notebook" or a "laptop." That's because we believe you should be able to tell something about the portability of a portable computer without having to look up size and weight details in a features table. Sure, we give you the details, but we also include significant size and weight information in such descriptive terms as "notebook" or "standard laptop" or "ultra lightweight laptop."

Type of Mobile Computer Weight (Pounds) with standard battery Size (Width & Depth Inches)
Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) Less than 2.5 Fits in standard size pocket
Ultra Lightweight Laptop 2.5 or less Does not fit in standard size pocket
Lightweight Laptop 2.6 to 4 NA
Standard Laptop 4.1 to 6.5 or less 13 x 11
Notebook Over 6.5 Over 13 x 11

By MobilityGuru's classification system, the 13.98" x 1.46" x 10.08" (35.5 x 3.7 x 25.6 cm), 6.37 pound MSI MS-1029 portable computer just barely misses classification as a standard laptop, falling, rather, into the notebook class. It's that 13.98" width that does it.
