$280 Goggles Play Movies via SD Card Reader

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

These cool glasses bring movies to your face via a built-in micro SD reader.

Zap! Pow! These glasses bring TV, movies and other content right to your eyeballs!Chip Chick points the way to a rather cool set of video glasess from iTVGoggles that supposedly displays a 50-inch or greater TV screen-- seen from just over six feet away-- right into your eyeballs. The device doesn't appear too geeky either, looking like a cool set of futuristic shades that even the X-Men's Scott Summers (Cyclops) might appreciate.

While iTVGoggles's original specs aren't exactly new, apparently the company has now released an improved model-- the ITG-Vidix Video Glasses-- that allows the goggles to read directly from a built-in Micro SD card reader. This is ideal for transferring and watching movies of up to 32 GB, adding to the device's already pre-installed 2 GB of internal memory.

"The ITG-Vidix Video Glasses can operate independently and wirelessly via digital media files through it's built-in flash memory, and MicroSD cards," the company said. "HOWEVER, you still have the option to use this pair of iTVGoggles as a display device much like a regular TV. Play video games, watch DVDs, TV or even use with your camcorder!"

Unfortunately, these glasses don't appear to play HD content, projecting a 320 x 240 image (4:3 standard aspect ratio) directly into your eyes. However the plus side is that the specs come with an A/V input jack, allowing the device to connect to DVD players, the iPhone or iPod Touch (via the separate composite cable), game consoles, and more.

The ITG-Vidix Video Glasses retail for $280 USD, and can be purchased via PayPal by heading here. Sorry, hot model not included.

I guess your definition of geeky and mine are different...

Aren't these of the variety that give you massive headaches after about an hour of use?

...and how do your eyes feel after using this? I bet they'd hurt like a mofo. How big are the projections inside the glasses? 1" equivalent? I think this would be a good way to go blind.

4:3 & 320 x 240

Why even bother releasing this junk?

Even iPhones, Droids and many other phones are higher resolution then this and in a Wide creen format.

this type of devices have been available for a while... for those who fly on a regular basis, you could not miss these in the SkyMall magazines all over the planes.
the natural focal length of the eye lens is something around 20 cm, so anything that is projected to appear farther that that does not require accommodation. The eye lens is not strained anymore.
I guess these devices use divergent lenses to form the virtual image at a distance greater than that.
I'm waiting for the 3D application of these, would be kinda cool to watch a movie from a memory card on your glasses in 3D. Of course, the tech is not there yet, but in time...

That new Wide Creen format is the kicker. It's what plants crave. That and the fact that the creen is only 1" wide, with that high of resolution.

I dare YOU NegativeX, to come up with a WideCreen 1920x1080 resolution 1" creen.

Get to it you bastard.

Why hasn't Nvidia done this already??? Could you imagine having a compass/gyro attached to it? That would be AWESOME in a video game. Totally possible, totally feasible. It could DEFINITELY be done.

It doesn't have to be 1920x1080. As long as it's more than 320x240 and 16:9!!

As for these goggles, they're certainly a step in the right direction. I'm waiting for wearable displays to replace screens and input interfaces (via motion recognition) so we can do away with touch screens, physical keyboards, mice and other 20th century junk. Imagine having a full featured workstation wherever you go that renders controls and displays in the air in front of you... heaven!

I went to see avatar in 3D with the goggles and stuff, my head almost exploded like 10 times during the movie, I'm aware that this is a complete different thing.
But came on.. directly into your eyes!? CAN'T be any good.

Yawn, nothing to see here short battery life, no HD, no wide screen. May as well watch movies on your PSP or iPhone.

240p can handle most arcade-style games but these aren't interactive in any way. :/

They need an external battery pack for it. I'd use it to watch music videos on the bus.

The question is, what resolution is needed at that distance. With regular TVs and screens, the closer you get the more DPI you need to make it seem smooth. These are pretty close to your eyes - so I imagine you will need a very dense DPI to catch on. As soon as we get a wireless spec that can handle video streams without microwaves trashing them we can actually use these instead of screens.
