Asus: Our Netbooks Are More Popular than iPad
Asus says its EeePC netbooks will be more popular than the iPad.
Asus CEO Jerry Chen recently told PC Advisor that the company's EeePC netbook series will be more popular than Apple's iPad because they address personal computing. That's certainly a very bold statement given that Apple sold more than 300,000 iPad units on the first day of availability. Still, as with the iPhone and iPod Touch, the device doesn't really offer personalization. Instead, it's more suited for cloud computing.
"The tablet PC is a cloud computing device," he said, referring to the just-released iPad. "If it weren't for Apple, this market would develop a lot more slowly."
He elaborated, stating that devices like the iPad tend to store their data in the cloud. On a device similar to the Eee PC netbook series however, applications and data are stored locally on an internal HDD. He also believes that there's only a small overlap in functionality between the cloud-based device and the personal computing device.
As reported earlier, Asus plans to launch its own "cloud-based computing" tablets this June during Computex Taipei 2010. Chen said that the Windows-based version of its upcoming EeePad will hit the market first, however that launch might be delayed, depending on "market enthusiasm for tablets at that time."

Uh wha? Data on the iPad is stored locally. That's why its available in 16/32/64GB.
the ipad was designed for computing in a smug cloud
So, does the accompanying sexist picture suggest Tampons are more popular than Sanitary Pads? Storage is different but both serve the same purpose.

Just because it has a hard drive and stores data locally doesn't mean it isn't a cloud computing device.
The iPad was designed to empty pockets. Asus is right though netbook's are far more practical between the two so they certainly should be more popular between the two. I'd pick a netbook over a iPad especially if it were a ION and/or tablet based netbook.
Alot of talk about nothing. Good luck with your new tablet, your going to need it cause Apple is the best when it comes to portable devices. They are kicking everyones butt right now and i don't see that changeing anytime soon.
Just wait for the new HP Palm-PAQ to arrive and then you'll see.... ;-)
Dunno what I would do with an Ipad, on the other hand I got plenty of work for my EEE and my Itouch pretty much fill my need for aluminium plated gimmicks.

actually no, a great deal of the application for the apps on the iPhone et al store their information for users in the cloud, the device merely becomes a gateway to access this information, kinda like FB, dont matter what you use to access ur FB account they all have access to the same set of information and at no time does any of that information get stored on a local level, the iPad really isn't a mobile computing platform but rather a mobile cloud portal, thus the low hardware specs and closed OS
our good friend at asus believe (rightly or wrongly that their netbooks are mobile computing platform rather then just cloud portals
He is right though. We have never seen a Tablet really create a strong case that a lot of users want that type of device. Apple tends to create initial hype for something. But it will depend on how much early adopters like it that will set its adoption down the road. In my own opinion I think the iPad has limited appeal and usefulness just as the Netbook has turned out to be.
very true..
How much for the pictured docking station?
*snicker snicker*
That said, I love my aiEeeeeee (Caveman reference) netbook.
I like how the article says that "eePC netbook series will be more popular than Apple's iPad"
but the title says that they ARE more popular... misleading. hmm
I thought everyone was saying that the iPad failed because it only sold 300,000 units the fist day. Looks like someone got some Apple Kool-Aid

What a dumbass.
if you don't know how something works, how about stfu and keep those BS to your own dumb self ?

People are sad these days, as long as the device has Apple's logo on it, even inside is a piece of shit people will still fight till' death to try to lay their hands on it.
Who cares, I know I never bought any "shit" if you know what I mean and never will.
Cloud computing does not appeal to me. I have no interest in giving more control to the likes of Google and Apple.
Where is the article? All I see is a picture

one should be able to personalize when ever they like after all buying the device and at some point service so should there be a right to.

actually cloud computing was suppose to give some control back to you, it is quite feasible for you to setup a data server on a home network and have it accessible directly or through a third party, cloud computer was suppose to segment the computing platform and allow you to choose which ever service best fits your needs from whoever you wished, it's just apple decided to mess it all up with their app approval system and closed OS
id much rather use cloud computing on my iPad, (and dont knock cloud computing unless you actually use EMC and Cisco products and know what the hell it is capable of) than store my info on a slow piece of shit netbook. 64GB is more than enough for me. everyone, right now, go look at how much used space is on your slow piece of shit netbook and report back to me. yah, i thought so.
I'd rather go with the netbook that has more processing power than the iPad, that can do both Cloud AND non-Cloud tasks, can be more thoroughly customized to my needs, and doesn't end up gouging my wallet for what I get in return.
Oh come on now ASUS, don't give Apple any more ideas. We don't need them releasing skin and gui packs through the App Store. That will just kill you more.
Just release your tablets and start saturating the market like you did with netbooks before Apple gains too much ground and they corner the tablet market like they did with music players and smart phones.
Cute pic.
Ipad is not a couputer, it is a toy.Just like ipod and it is a bigger version.
Not really its just Apple has fanboys its not as if we can expect 300,000 iPads to continue such a rate of sales nor has it. Most of the people who buy the iPad don't even have a practical use for it that merits the price.
Will the iPad sell more than Asus's netbook? Perhaps but I also think the real way to look at it is all netbook sales not just Asus. If you considered those numbers netbooks sell more by a vast majority. Asus actually has competition making pretty much the same product while Apple fears competition and is unwilling to even let even a small business sell a Mac OS on a non Mac computer.
I've found far more practicality in a netbook than from the ipad. Almost everyone in my family has an eeepc because it's so damn convenient. And with about 14 hours of battery life- it's really hard not to take it everywhere.

Um, what? Current netbooks are faster than iPads with more uses and larger hard drives as well. I'm not sure what your argument is. You want them to slap your iPod Touch OS on there for you?

So the Ipad has a dumbed down almost able to multitask OS and all of the sudden that makes it fast? My favorite part is that it can almost browse websites without error.
Honestly, when I see one I think it just looks stupid. All I see is someone holding a gigantic Ipod that does the same things as... an Ipod. I would love to see someone holding it to there head like the Iphone if they forget their headset, that would bring me smiles.

I think you are just a appletard talking with terms you have no clue about.
