7. LCOS Rear Projection

This is a newer technology relative to LCD and DLP, and the quality and performance has historically been highly variable among models. A few companies have offered LCOS and then dropped out, but Sony and JVC are now the two primary retailers. Sony calls their LCOS "SXRD" and JVC calls it "HD-ILA" and when its done right, LCOS can outperform DLP and LCD projection displays. LCOS' are usually quite bright for a projection display with accurate color representation, and both Sony and JVC provide high-resolution 1,080p models. Some models have been reported to have uniformity issues with blurring at the corners. Prices for the older 720p models range from $1,000-$1,750 and the 1080p models are priced at $1,500-$2,500 for 50-60" models and $2,500-$4,000 for the ultra large 60" 70" models.

Pros: Very good overall image quality, brightness, contrast.
Cons: Depends on the model, but some have uniformity issues. Prices for the higher quality models are slightly higher than LCD and DLP.
Who's it for? Customers want great image quality and are willing to research different models to get it.
