Converting A Digital Video
For this benchmark we use Mainconcept Version 1.3.1. The test file is 1.2 GB. The time clocked is that needed to convert the file and write it back to the hard drive.

This real-world benchmark can be achieved with the 7200-rpm hard drive with a speed advantage that is more than 15% better than that achieved by the standard model with 4200 rpm, or in absolute terms 53 seconds. Seagate's Momentus (5400 rpm) is still almost 14 percent ahead of the standard local memory.
Performance In Comparison A Desktop Hard Drive
To get an approximate impression of the power of the current notebook hard drives in comparison to a desktop model, we also determined the Business Disk Winmark value for a desktop hard drive for this test.

The Diamond Max Plus 60 from Maxtor is a somewhat "older" model that we used until recently in the lab as a system drive in motherboard tests. The disk speed of the Diamond Max Plus 60 is about 7200 rpm, the cache is 2 MB. For the test, the drive was run as a master in an Athlon system (Athlon XP3200+, 512 MB DDR RAM, motherboard Asus A7N8X) on the second IDE channel of the onboard controller.
As the values show, current notebook hard drives can easily keep up with typical desktop local memories.
