7. Sound And Video Cards

I decided against installing a high-powered graphics card that would surely add heat and noise to the system. I have a great gaming PC so I wouldn't lament a lack of gaming prowess in my HTPC. The ATI Radeon 9600 that I was using in my previous HTPC was working fine and I would have continued to use it, but my Gigabyte motherboard had a PCI express slot instead of an AGP slot.

So I went searching for a passively cooled video card. I was lucky and it wasn't long before I found a few reviews for an ATI Radeon X550GE made by Asus. It was cheap, capable of high-definition resolutions, sported a hefty 256 MB of memory and despite its passive cooler, was reportedly powerful enough to run a few higher-end PC games. All that and blissful silence too? Perfect!

Video card fans can make a lot of noise. A passive cooler is the only way to go to for a quiet HTPC.
