Cerevellum Add-On Promises Safer Bike Rides

A concept dating back to 2007 is now set to hit the market next year.

Performance cyclists never opt to install rear-view mirrors because they create drag. The Cerevellum seeks to change that by serving as an all-in-one safety and monitoring add-on for a bike's handlebar. Aside from a small display that show the rear-view feed from a built-in camera, the Cerevellum also measures heartbeat and power levels through its ANT+ compatible system, and even records accidents.

The bicycle gadget was inspired by personal tragedy. Evan Solida was a state champion cyclist who was hit by a car back in 2007. The accident, while relatively minor, left some psychological scars.

"I landed on my face," Solida said. "The accident really shook me up. I did a few more races, but eventually lost my drive."

Solida founded Cerevellum in 2009 and soon developed the first prototype.

Currently the final product is set for a "Spring 2011" ship date in North Amerca, and is available for pre-order at a starting price of $500. A promised 2012 update will add a GPS antenna and mapping software.
